Books

Some of our favorite books — bead and jewelry related that is! (We love books almost as much as beads.) No well stocked bathroom, er, bead library is complete without these books for reference, learning, and inspiration! If you can read it, you can do it!

Recommendations? For a beginner? The Beaders’ Companion is an excellent reference for all the basic stitches and techniques. For inspiration? 500 Beaded Objects will take your breath away in a flurry of "ohmigawdisthatbeads." Findings & Finishings is excellent for those who have advanced to the stage where you want more than to just stick a clasp on. The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving is a must for the serious beadweaving fanatic (not so much an instruction book as inspiration and awe-inducing.) And no lampworker or collector or enthusiast should be without 1000 Glass Beads.

See our Art Clay Silver page for books on Metal Clay and our Lampwork books page for books specific to making glass beads.

Book - Beading with Cubes and Triangles - By Alice Korach
If you've ever stared at a package of cubes beads or triangle beads, lovingly caressing the package and admiring the colour, but then talked yourself out of them because "what would I do with them?" - then this is your book. If you didn't talk yourself out of them, this is REALLY your book. The author says " There?s a reason why cubes and triangles are underrepresented in project books. They?re tricky beads to use well with those sharp angles and big holes. And I?d done very little with them for that very reason. But I like a fun challenge ... one idea led to the next at a dizzying rate." There are some really intriquing projects here - I might almost be seduced by them. Index page - shows projects. Book - Creative Silver Chains - By Chantal Lise Saunders (1)
From the introduction, by the author - "I wrote this book to share with you how I make my unique silver chains. After you have gathered the necessary tools and materials described in Studio Essentials, I show you how to handle them in the Techniques section. I demonstrate how to move the wire in basic ways and how to most effectively use the tools and your hands to do so. For beginners, there are special warm-up exercises. Finally, the chain-making concepts described in the Design chapter should provide a good foundation for your creative imagination. The first few step-by-step projects are easy ones that will help you put your basic skills to satisfying use. If you're new to wire work, I suggest that you try the projects in the order, (more or less) they're given, because the latter ones are definitely more challenging. . . . I hope that the techniques and designs . . . inspire you to make your own artful chains." Covers hammering and soldering and pin connections too. 9 X 10.5 inches. All in color. Hardcover. 110 pages.

Silver jewelry is a classic accessory that never goes out of style. Crafters and jewelry makers will learn to create dazzling silver designs with Jewelry Studio: Silver Wire Fusing, an all-in-one guide to a no-muss, no-fuss version of silversmithing. Since less equipment is required-fine silver is heated with a torch to fuse it without solder-it is a very cost-effective way to learn basic metalsmithing skills, making it more accessible and affordable for the average crafter. Even the most basic beginner and the most experienced jewelry maker will find silver fusing to be fun, easy to master, and extremely inspiring and addictive. Liz Jones, a jewelry designer and silver fusing teacher at Fusion Beads in Seattle, Washington, takes the beginner through all the necessary steps in this workshop-in-a book that combines technique-building exercises with great projects, all shown through detailed step-by-step photography. Begin with essential tools and materials and setting up a work space, then move into basic techniques like hammering, tumbling and professional finishing, fusing a ring, and creating basic chain. Once you've mastered these foundation skills, it's time to take it up a notch and learn how to fuse large circles, fuse a bail on heavy wire gauges, fuse with cubic zirconia, work with fine gauges, and understand sizing formulas for rings.
