Books — Lampworking

If you don't know already, lampworking is the ancient art of handmaking glass beads. It is a deeply addictive obsession! We offer glass, supplies, studio space, and, of course, the beads themselves. Oh, and these inspiring books too!

RECOMMENDATIONS: If you want to learn to make glass beads yourself, and you can't get to a class, or even if you can, read Cindy Jenkin's "Making Glass Beads." Period. Bar none - the best book for getting started. "Passing the Flame" is also fabulous — AFTER taking a class or spending some time on the torch - as it is light on the getting started aspect (and that isn't the book's focus so that is not a flaw.) But as you want to progress or have questions about how many of the beads that you see available and being made are done, it is invaluable. I also highly recommend "Jim Smirich's Amazing Control of Heat" once you get tired of making beads with pointy ends or that are uneven or struggling with shapes. (Or, you can always sign up for more classes with us.)

Which is not to say anthing against the other books listed here, as they are all very good. Those are just our opinions - in case you are stuck trying to figure out which to buy first.

Book - Passing the Flame: A Beadmakers' Guide to Detail & Design. - By Corina Tettinger (1)
A definitive reference work for lampwork beadmakers. We have already seen the influence of this book on the beads available for sale at shows and online. If you aspire to make professional quality lampwork beads for yourself or sale, then this book is a must have. This book will teach you things that you didn't even know you didn't know. Written in a very funky, conversational and non-intimidating style. This book covers a lot of techniques in exquisite, step-by-step photo and written detail. She also covers the different working characteristics of some of the trickier/more interesting class colours in the Moretti/Effetre palette, i.e. Rubino Oro, Turquoise, Ivory. There are also gorgeous galleries of examples, asides with a spotlight on a particular problem or issue. Topics covered include (but not limited to): Getting to know your glass; First Steps, the Basic Round Bead; Tablets, Cubes, Barrels, Cones, Bicones, Hearts; Dots, Spacing, Distortion, Poking, Twisting; Stringer, Twistie Cane, Tiger beads, Encasing; Frit; Silver, Lentils, Setting up the Studio. Easily the equivalent to taking a lampworking class (but not an introductory, start from scratch class.) We completely recommend this book. This is the Revised Second Edition or Third Edition - we can find no difference between the two except the words "revised second edition" or "third edition" on the cover. There are additional pages from the first edition, however. An essential addition the the library of the serious and hobby lampworker alike. 224 pages. Stayflat spiral binding. Hardcover, full colour, 9.5 x 11.75 inches. Phenomenal Deal - Much better price

Book - Tonbo-Dama - Japanese Glass Beads - by Norikazu Kogure (1)
Just when you thought you were getting a handle on working glass - just when you were starting to feel some pride in your beads - bingo - along comes this book and humbles you again. Filled with omigawd techniques and beads of such delicacy and precision, they make you want to scream and cry. However, the author has anticipated this emotional outburst and has this to say on the subject: Do not work hard to become better - listen to good music, eat good food. Enjoy the present circumstances, even though they are far from satisfactory. Be thrilled with the great work you do, forgive and encourage yourself, keep moving forward - it is a precious experience which cannot be lived again. Couldn't have said it better myself. Mostly in Japanese, with the salient parts translated into English. This book features Japanese torches and the ultra-soft Satake glass - but is relevant to soft-glass workers of all types. Also covers core vessels. 112 pages. 8 1/2 X 10.5. All in color. Softcover
