Hand Crocheted Chain

Course Outline:

Create the ultimate handmade chain to showcase your jewelry designs under the guidance of internationally renowned goldsmith Michael David Sturlin.

A hand-crocheted chain is one of the most supple, beautiful, and unique of all the metal chains which a jewelry artist can produce. Participants will learn to fabricate Mr. Sturlin’s signature style, award winning, hand crochet technique. Each student will use a needle and fine silver wire to produce a supple and elegant bracelet or necklace chain, ready for a clasp.

This workshop is process oriented and is suitable for any level student. No previous experience in textiles, metalsmithing or jewelry making of any kind is necessary.

Skill Level: Beginner/All Levels

Price: $ 450.00(+GST), deposit or payment in advance required

Supplies: $80.00 (+tax). Kit includes fine silver wire, crochet needles, spindle and written handouts. Students should however bring with them a plastic box or container for all of their wire clippings and magnification--which Michael strongly recommends. Students will be using our studio chain nose and round nose pliers as well as cutters. If you prefer your own tools you are welcome to bring those along.

Need to Bring: For this technique the correct magnification is essential. Students should bring visual aid for clear vision at a distance of 7 inches from tip of the nose; typically reading glasses (300 to 350) or an optivisor type device (#5 lens). Instructor suggests that reading glasses are preferable for extended use.

This is a full day class, please bring a lunch. Coffee, tea, pop are provided.

Michael David Sturlin's 40 year career as a studio jewelry artist, educator, industry consultant and award winning goldsmith includes recognition from the World Gold Council, the American Jewelry Design Council, and the Jewelers of America's JA NY New Designer Gallery. Michael's internationally acclaimed jewelry focusing on minimalism in precious metal  has been published in 75 magazine articles and is featured in the books MASTERS:GOLD and Crocheted Wire Jewelry.

Faculty member of the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, and a popular visiting guest artist and conference presenter, Michael devotes his time to sharing his expertise and insight with students at every level from beginners to accomplished professionals.
