Sawing and Piercing

Course Outline: Sawing and piercing can be one of the most aesthetically pleasing and satisfying activities at the bench. Because it requires so little this is truly an application of minimalism in the studio. The jeweler's saw is one of the most versatile and functional tools on the goldsmith's bench. It is also one of the most precise and skillful means of creating an endless variety of jewelry designs directly in metal. Many aspiring jewelry makers aren't especially fond of sawing. This is largely due to the lack of proper introduction to the tool followed by inadequate instruction in its use. This is easily alleviated just by knowing how to hold the tool correctly and learning how to approach the work with an advantageous perspective. Controlled use of the saw provides an excellent opportunity for a meditative and purposeful exercise in creativity in the studio. This class provides expert instruction with the tool and the technique followed by skill development and refinement through repetitive hands-on exercises sawing lines, shapes, cutouts, patterns, and decorative borders.
