Introduction to Metal Clay
Red Bronze, White Bronze, Copper

Course outline: This class will introduce you to the affordable world of base metal clays - Red Bronze, White Bronze and Copper. This class will introduce you to the differences and similarities between pre-mixed (lump) clay and powdered metal clay that you mix up as needed. As well, if you're interested in working in silver clay, this is a good introduction to the medium. You'll become accustomed to the "feel" and the working methods best suited to metal clay. Additionally, base metal clays have a long "open working time" allowing more time to explore and become accustomed to working with this material. Firing, cleaning and polishing, and troubleshooting will also be discussed and demonstrated.

Technique: Metal Clay

Bring to class: Hadar's Clay (Quick Fire Copper, Quick Fire Rose Bronze, Quick Fire Bronze, White Bronze) or Prometheus pre-mixed clay  (White or Red Bronze, Copper), available at BeadFX. You will purchase clay as you need it as the classes proceeds. Bring metal clay tools, if you have them.  If not, they will be supplied at BeadFX.  Also helpful:  dremel tool , radial disk brushes for finishing and polishing.

IMPORTANT – Hadar’s and Prometheus clays cannot be mixed in the same piece and have different firing schedules.

About Liz Reynolds

Liz has a creative background in pottery and textiles. She discovered metal clay in 2004 and was thrilled by the idea of translating textile patterns and textures onto clay, and then transforming the clay into metal. She has studied with local artists and internationally known metal clay masters including Hadar Jacobson and Wanaree Tanner. She is an Accredited Hadar’s Clay Instructor, one of very few in Canada, and has been teaching since 2010.

Her jewelry is sold in Ontario and Quebec.
