The Business Chat – Selling and You

Oh boy, I am one busy little elf these days and I’m sure all of you are too. Between orders and shows there’s all of those brilliant ideas I had to make gifts this year. While I’ve become much better at time management within my jewelry business, I’m not very good at time management for stuff like knitting hats as a gift. Or making ornaments. In the new year I intend on spending some time talking about time management. For now I’m continuing on in the same thread of the past couple of posts – selling at crafts shows. Even …

Inspiration Friday

Happy Friday everyone! We’re taking a bit of a break from our regular Inspiration Friday posts to show off what we’re working on for the holidays. We’re all far too busy at this time of year to even think about creating something for no particular reason at all. At least I am… And I don’t want to hear from any of you who got all of their Christmas shopping finished in October – and now enjoying the holiday season sipping wine, or eggnog every night. 😉 Nathalie sent us in some pieces from her artfire shop that she made up …

Benchtube

We’ve all heard of Youtube, but Benchtube? This is an awesome resource from the Ganoksin project (aka Orchid). Grab some tea, and hunker down to watch a ton of video’s on jewelry making, fabrication techniques, studio tours…and tons more besides.  It’s on my agenda for later this evening. I promised myself I wouldn’t delve too deep until I get some work done 🙂 I really can’t say enough good things about Orchid. Whether you’re a goldsmith, wireworker, metal clay artist…or even just interested in jewelry. There is a huge wealth of information available here. From Ganoksin.com : The Ganoksin project …

ReCap

As the year comes to an end, I think it appropriate to say it’s been an eventful year at beadFX. Variety of instructors with a variety of classes. I hope you enjoyed the classes as much as I enjoyed organising them. There’s a lot to look forward to in the new year. We have 4 guest instructors coming to teach in 2011. I won’t spill the beans on the identity of all 4 instructors, but I can tell you that Michael David Sturlin is going to be back. Fabulous jewellery designer, Diane Fitzgerald will be teaching next Spring. You’ll have …

Smart Blur: Photoshop Tip

Hey – I haven’t posted a photography tip in a long time – mostly because I have already taught you everything I know. But I learned something new in the last little while, and recently had reason to use it. Last Wednesday, I posted a photo of a piece I made for the weekly inspiration. When I first posted the photo, it looked like this. I uploaded it, looked at it, and thought, “Eww! Where did all those scratches and gunk in the background come from? Nasty!” Generally, at that point, I consider my options to be: Re-shoot it re-touch …

The Joy of Metal Clay – Holiday Inspirations

The holiday season is upon us. What type of holiday inspired metal clay items have you or will you make? Personally, I celebrate Christmas…so I am inclined to make Christmas tree ornaments and jewellery. I love Christmas yet my inclination to create more winter themed items. There are two reasons for this: 1) Silver makes great snow & 2) I like my jewellery to be wearable for longer than a month. Here are a few examples: Snowmen earrings (my Mom thinks they look like penguins….I think she is kinda right) These are made with different sized circles and syringe to …

Inspiration Friday – er Saturday

Heh. I’ve typed that title before 🙂 The kids kept me quite busy last night, and I didn’t get a chance to get anything photographed. Fortunately, we have some submissions this week!  Carmela G. of Sterling Story on etsy sent us a few things she’s been working on for etsy, and Christmas gifts. Jeannie G has been working on some gorgeous new focal beads – Check them out on etsy, and artfire. If you would like to participate in our Inspiration Friday posts and get some free publicity…Come on people – free publicity is good!  It really can be anything …

The Business Chat – Finding Shows

I’m day 9 into the 11-day One of a Kind show and stringing 2 words together is not the easiest task right now. Please excuse the brevity of this post. This is not a show for the faint of heart, it’s a marathon endeavour. Last week I mentioned some booth etiquette for vendors, here’s a tip for shoppers. If you have bought a piece from an artist, or met them somewhere, when you stop by their booth please don’t just assume that they will remember you. Always introduce yourself. After 9 days, 12 hours a day of speaking with the …
