New This Week

FREE BEER!  Captured your Attention? Well – we don’t have free beer – but I once had a friend who wanted to name a band “Free Beer.” He figured that having that on the marquee on the front of the club would guarantee a good turn out. What we do have is some new “Capture” knitted wire tube. Capture has bead chain inside, making for a nice, fat, textured knitted wire tube. This new line is called Pearlesque – for it’s iridescent effect. It’s very glam! Find it here on the Silver Silk page! Viking Knit caps – no – …

My busts have arrived

😉 My bust forms for the bust form creative challenge that is. lol. I finally opened the box this morning, and I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the forms and bases. With shipping, the forms worked out to about $40 each. The acrylic base is heavy, and the rod is height adjustable. Pretty much almost exactly what I was looking for. Well, I really wanted a vintage judy…but I would have paid a lot more for that. I can’t wait to get started decorating them, plus I’m inclined to also try to make one completely from scratch. …

The Skinny on Thread for Big Projects

Dear beadFX:   I’m going to be doing a large project using Size 11/0 Delicas in Peyote stitch. The project is over 15 inches across. What thread would you suggest using? signed, Thread-confused! Dear Thread Confused: Generally speaking, Fireline, PowerPro and One G have little to no stretch, whereas Nymo can stretch quite a lot. Given the total weight of the beads you will be using, this could be a factor if the project is free-hanging. If it is supported on some kind of backing – then this may not be as big a factor. Projects of this size can be …

The Joy of Metal Clay: Masters Registry

Photo of piece by Level II Master Registry Artist Michela Verani The Masters Registry is a self directed program for metal clay artists this is not affiliated with a specific metal clay brand. It is not a course and does not provide instruction but allows one to have their creations evaluated by experts and provides five levels of recognition if an acceptable passing grade is achieved. Apparently the concept for the program began in 2004 as a result of confusion related to the numerous brand specific certification program available, a detailed history is provided on the Master Registry site. It …

The Business Chat – SMART goals

Going over my Annual Review is always an interesting exercise. I’m very very good at making goals, and sometimes I’ve even good at meeting those goals. I, however, like most people have a habit of getting caught up in the exercise of making goals. Don’t get me wrong, goals are absolutely necessary for your crafty business to succeed, however it’s important that your goals and manageable and realistic. There are several reasons why goals don’t work out most of the time. First, we tend to make goals based on nice numbers. We say things like “I want to double sales …

Beaded Laughter

Just in case you’ve missed this – Sylvie Elise Lansdowne has created an absolutely hilarious blog called Beaded Laughter – inspired by the Handmade Ryan Gosling site. Beaded laughter features among others, Gerard Butler (can’t say I really notice the others), along with funny little quips for her friends. Love this, and it’s certainly moving over onto my daily reading list.

Creating your own vintage bust forms

For a while now, I’ve been occasionally hunting kijiji for a cheap dressmakers judy to use for photographing necklaces. I have some necklace display forms, but really wanted something close to lifesize for photography – or at least bigger than your standard display forms. I came across a tutorial online that I wanted to share with you all.  The Polka Dot Closet shows how she altered some inexpensive larger jewelry displays. Maybe we can get Marg to order some of these larger displays – We’ll have space once we move! If you would prefer to go full on out DIY, …
