I’m gonna link you up …

I’m gonna link you up – link you up with some stone links! These faceted stones, come already mounted in a lovely metal setting (somewhat channel-shaped, to better stay in place around the edge of the faceted stone – hence the name!). Some have a single loop at one end – we designate them at “pendants” and some have two loops, one at each end – we call those “links.” Already, you can see the possibilities! You can hook them together – plain and simple, with jump rings, or get fancy and use them to accent a more elaborate design! …

Fold-forming

Fold-forming was developed by a Canadian (by way of the UK) who lives in Calgary, Charles Lewton-Brain. It is generally acknowledged to be the first new metalsmithing technique developed in thousands of years. When you fold-form metal, you take a flat piece and transform it through repeated steps of forging (hammering) and annealing into a three dimensional work. It’s magical, and the journey is satisfying in so many ways. I’ve said to my students, over the years, that I must have been a blacksmith in another life since I get such satisfaction out of hammering on metal. There’s nothing like …

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer:
We’re Sirius about our Classes!

Dog Days is the name for the most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to August 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun. – Columbia Encyclopedia Yes, I know puns are the lowest form of humour, but it fits so well! The fact of the matter is that our instructors continue to offer classes – including several new ones – during August. By the way, the air conditioning works …

The Paws that refreshes …

Pause for a moment, if you will – to contemplate those furry little beasties that enrich our lives and ask so little in return. If you are charmed by a cat or a dog, then you might be charmed by these paw print charms – a new addition to our now inappropriately named “Charms – Silver Letters” page. These top-quality Tierracast charms are now no longer limited to Silver, or Letters. In fact – we have Numbers now too! And an “and.” And the planet. Which is appropriate for those of you who want to save the world. Or conquer …

Shoot Loom for Bag

So, as the official photographer for BeadFX – I often arrive to find boxes, bags, and cryptics notes on my desk. Last week – there was one of the Mirrix looms that we carry, on my desk, with a WIP (work in progress) on it, and a note that said “Shoot for bag.” Well – it might have said that. Turns out it did say that – but I spent a lot of time trying to interpret “bag” as “class” or someone’s name or an event. Cuz, you know, bags don’t usually ask to have stuff shot for them. Eventually, …

Soldering Made Easy

I adore paste solder. Since I learned how to use it a couple of years ago, I use it almost exclusively. If you’ve never heard of or encountered paste solder, it is solder that is pre-mixed with flux and sold in syringes: it comes in hard, medium and easy, just like wire or sheet solder. You can also buy copper solder in paste format in a syringe. I prefer using silver solder on both copper and brass. Here’s what the tubes look like. They range, depending on size, shipping and retailer etc., from about $10 – $20. I was introduced …
