Create and abandon!

News flash! I’m going to jettison the post I was originally going to write today, and focus on the process of creating and abandoning some of my work! I confess that I’ve been a member of a Facebook group called Art Abandonment (sorry, I tried to include a link, but it didn’t work, so you’ll need to search on Facebook) for years, and have never once made a conscious effort to abandon anything (shame on me). Sure, there’s always the bookmarks that I forget in my library books, but these accidental abandonments, don’t really count. I have left mystery presents, …

Finding Nemo – or maybe just Delicas

I got an earful the other day from a customer who was severely frustrated at trying to find a specific Delica colour on our website. She was searching for DB-541. We made a conscious effort, right back in the beginning, when we first started carrying Delicas, to preserve their original numbering. As have most of the other bead vendors online. So the names may change, but the numbers don’t – which means that if you have a pattern that calls for DB-1 – well – everywhere you go – that’s going to be gunmetal. Or Hematite. Or Dark Metallic Grey. …

Which way did it go?

Have you found that you’ve lost interest in your art? Staring into a hole in your creativity is certainly scary, but if you open yourself up to possibilities, you may be surprised at what the tide washes in! I just had to take a walk on the beach last Friday, as the weather was unseasonably warm (18C), and totally delightful! What better time to blow out the cobwebs, and gather some natural elements for future projects? Camera in hand, I set out to see what I could see. Art is apparently everywhere!!! I wonder who took the time to build …

Stick a pin in it

The humble pin. It’s back in the news this fall in a big way — both as a political statement and as a fashion statement that harks back to a political statement of the 70s.  Here’s a sample of pins used in runway jewellery as part of the fall collections.  As we are all very aware, after Brexit and now the US election, safety pins are being donned by those who want to indicate they are friendly and a safe haven for anyone experiencing hate crimes and to show solidarity against xenophobia.  But today’s blog is about this oldest and …
