We are lucky at BeadFX to have such high caliber instructors; many whom have taught internationally and are also invited to try products on behalf of manufacturers and give feedback. Enamelling and metal clay instructor Christine Woollacott was a featured artist in the February 2017 issue of Artisan Jewelry Times, an e-zine dedicated to sharing the best of designer and artisan jewellery domestically and internationally. In addition, Christine also has a tutorial in the e-zine for a pair of beautiful earrings and matching pendant.
Christine’s article, Styles of Enamelling, focuses on the differences between well-established enamelling techniques such as Cloisonne and Champleve.
The classification of enamelling styles into distinctive techniques can help you to understand how an enamelled piece has been constructed. Enamelling techniques are often combined with striking results. For instance, champleve, basse taille, and cloisonne can be combined in a single piece.
Her tutorial, Brilliant Color, tells how to create jewellery using Cloisonne, a method of enamelling within sections that have been separated with wire. The earrings and pendant set are created using fine silver metal clay, fine silver cloisonne wire, and lead-free enamel.
“My educational background is based in the sciences, and I find that I approach art in an experimental fashion. Enamel encourages experimentation, because it is so changeable. Glass can be very reactive, and as an artist, I strive to predict the reactions that occur to create a desired shape, texture, or effect in my work,” says Christine.
