Pearls that will speak for themselves

This week – it’s pearls. Strands of pearls for your pearly pleasure. And that includes some Big Hole pearls too, for using on cord, leather, wrap bracelets, etc. I don’t think I need to say much about pearls – you know what a pearl is, and you know that you like them!   We just restocked on the Bead on it Boards, and added a dark velvet version (for those working with light coloured beads that disappear on the cream background.)       To go with those pearls? Don’t forget the easy knotter, and for the ultimate traditional knotted …

May 2018 Bead Mat Update: Two steps back, one step forward!

My May 2018 bead mat update signals a return to my roots. Fibre has always been my first love, and I must admit that I’m enjoying the process immensely. Did my Stitch Meditations have anything to do with my current obsession with fibre? I certainly expect so! What if I combined fibre, beads, embroidery, felting, and natural elements? Isn’t that what I’m all about? My muse was whispering insistently, so I just had to shut her up!! This stitched stone has been sitting on the sidelines for a while, but I decided to finish it off with freeform peyote, just …

Bead-Treat was a treat for all!

There was laughter! There was fun! There were prizes! There was food! What was it? Bead-Treat! Seven women, coming from locales stretching from Amherstburg in Southwest Ontario through to Montreal, Quebec, and several points in-between, came together for three classes with three instructors over the May 4 – 6 weekend. Situated on the beautiful Fanshawe College campus in London, the participants learned how to construct Cavandoli end caps with Angela Peace, create a statement chainmaille bracelet with Marilyn Gardiner, and how to do sparkly beaded components to create a variety of projects with Pamela Kearns. We had lots of participation …

It’s a Rocky Road – but it’s 20% off!

Which means – that when you slip on a piece of chocolate, you land face first in a marshmallow – which isn’t really all that bad. So, in the spirit of that, we are tempting you this week with new “Rocks” – stone beads, but you can land in the marshmallows, because we are putting all the stone beads on sale – at 20% off! Including the new ones. 😉 Iolite and African Turquoise! African Turquoise is a black-spotted jasper in mint green and turquoise colours. Harder than actual turquoise; pretty, soothing colours, and budget-friendly – this is an excellent …

UFO 2 Go: Make plans to complete the aventure!

When I say UFO 2 Go (unfinished objects), how do you react? With confusion, interest, or perhaps abject terror! For me, it’s all of the above! Just the other day, the phrase UFO 2 go popped into my brain, as I was sorting through stuff in preparation for my Stitch Bits (aka Stitch Meditation) class this Thursday. One thing led to another, as I pulled more and more stuff out of the boxes, and realized that I had a whole lot of finishing to do! Okay, not everything I’m going to show you is really old, but I’m certainly not …

Think like a Designer with late-May classes

Imagine translating this image into bead embroidery, or enamel, or lampworked beads, or metalwork: where would you start? The incredible colours of the flowers? The shape of the tulip petals? Would you identify a single flower or try to capture the mass of the field? Learning a technique is the first step in designing your own piece of art jewellery. Once you become familiar with how to put components together, you can then create your own look – and ultimately – your own designs! Our late-May classes feature a wide variety of techniques for all levels of jewellery making. New …

Birds of a Feather – Bead Together

A big round Zen Moon face was cruising over the forest, calm and ethereal in the night sky. It was not alone among Zen Moons, but they took turns, because it would be too confusing to have multiple moons overhead. Two Fertility Goddesses were out for a pleasant stroll along the moonlit road, which was paved with Potholed Rectangles. “Damn,” she said Ms Turquoise as she turned her ankle for the third time. “I wish I didn’t have to walk down this path of potholes.” “Well,” said Ms Purple, who had so far, annoyingly, managed to step lightly over the …

Statement pendants! Are they the next big thing?

Statement pendants are a current jewelry trend, according to a recent issue of Jewelry Making Daily (Interweave). I find that very interesting, because I’ve been making, and wearing them for years! Does that make me fashion forward? As the article explains, “For spring and summer, pendants of all shapes, sizes, and configurations of materials, on very long strands of beads, chains, or leather cords”. Long lengths are definitely in, but I’m most comfortable with the 30-34″ range. Of course, the runways will always exaggerate and go longer, but those skinny models, don’t need to worry about the daily logistics! Imagine …
