If you’re into seed beading – especially peyote – like I am, you’ll be ‘chomping at the bit’ to join one of Nancy Cain’s classes at BeadFX! Known for her structural beadwork, Nancy will take your skills to the next level in each of her three classes: Couture Cuff; Vessel No. 1; and Fusion Ring and Bracelet.
According to Nancy in her Artist’s Statement, “I found my artistic niche in beads. I enjoy delving into beads mentally and physically depending on the circumstances. My favorite stitch is peyote and over the years I have only added two other stitches, netting then herringbone. I like to call these three stitches sister-stitches since they transition from one stitch to the other effortlessly.
“I feel that the beads alone give me the most inspiration. If you understand the physics (mechanics and technicality) of the stitch, then you can create whatever your heart desires. Knowing what each bead size, shape and finish will do and how they react with each other, plus how the beads respond to thread weight and use then the sky is the limit for designing! Nature is also phenomenal source of inspiration. I have created beetles, bees, dragonflies and now a sea urchin pendant. The challenge of creating something from life with seed beads is something that keeps me moving forward with my bead creations.”
Nancy’s upcoming classes are:
Friday, March 23; 10:00am – 5:00pm
Couture: High Fashion Design, Haute, Attention to Detail, Sophisticated, Elegant, Custom-made. In the style of expensive, fashionable, and hand sewn couture clothing, we are able to create our own high fashion custom accessories with beads, crystals and time invested in attention to detail.
Couture Cuff is a beautifully sophisticated statement piece handcrafted in structural peyote. The structure of the cuff’s channel is stitched with an inventive technique that I developed called Pinch-in-the-Ditch. The reward of taking time to handcraft the Couture Cuff is a magnificent display of beads and crystals, so comfortable to wear and beautiful to behold on the wrist.
Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced; Prerequisite: Odd-count flat peyote
Saturday, March 24; 10:00am – 5:00pm
Vessel No. 1 was the inspiration piece for my Bead & Button Show Master Class on engineering 3-dimensional vessel design. It is a hollow piece with interior embellishments for a visual surprise as well as creating additional support. Vessel No. 1 is an elegant, statement piece with chain gracing the bottom.
Design, balance and proportion as well as structure techniques are discussed throughout the piece and understanding 3D peyote work. The 3 rings are vertically stacked with 6mm pearl internal structure support if needed while the bottom ring is surfaced embellished. Swinging chain drops around a central crystal fringe strand. This is complex looking but not complex in structure that is fun and relatively quick to make.
Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced; Prerequisite: Tubular Peyote
Sunday, March 25; 10:00am – 5:00pm
This watch style piece is built from two separate components designed a year apart that have been fused together. The key is keeping all of your bead bits in a bowl for future use! The individual components are engineered with Peyote stitch and built in stages allowing the underside to have a fun peek-a-boo of embellishment. It is created from the outside-in and the inside-out alternately using the working and tail threads. You can make a bangle bracelet just using the square Puffy Links or a ring of just the center component.
Skill level: Intermediate/Advance; Prerequisite: Peyote (odd- and even-count)
Each of Nancy’s classes are $155 + HST and you can register on-line (or by calling the store) for each or all of the classes. A materials list is included on the web page and you can use your student discount to purchase supplies on the day of the class.
