Artful layering is something that I just made up this morning. Someone, somewhere has certainly used the term before, but possibly not about jewelery? The almighty Google did find a few things, but I believe that my jewelery reference could be pristine! I just couldn’t find another one!
I don’t mean the popular Boho look, but something simpler. I’m talking about layering two or three coordinated necklaces, of different lengths. Say a silver chain, with a fibre mixed media piece, with a lovely lampwork bead. Funny, I wore that combo on Monday!! Serendipity, and not planned! That aha moment, when I realized that my necklace colour, exactly matched my new, Dragon Jools lampwork bead, and both were perfect with my aqua cardigan! It’s all about balance!
I always wear at least one to three silver chains (18′, 20′, and 22′), so please imagine them in these photographs. The other pieces are all longer, but each one nestles comfortably beside the other. There is always a slight difference in length. It’s almost like I planned it!!! LOL!
I made most of these artful layering necklaces, but one set was a thrift shop purchase (see photo of the two pearl necklaces). I did plan to layer the Swarovski rosary chains (with all their bling – yes I’m crazy, those are 4 mm bicones!), but that’s the exception. No recent pieces in the bunch, so it’s probably time to make some more!
What do you think about my freeform peyote necklace (BeadFX class coming up in June)! Bold, but still an exercise in layering. I made each bead separately, then added them to the chain, as soon as they were finished. I’m not even sure that the colours go together, but they still work!
Then how about my two talisman necklaces? Do you think that they could be considered artful layering? I certainly do!
Look at this pile of my Stitch Meditations! Isn’t it luscious? I love taking photos of piled up items!!!
Are you ready to rummage through your necklaces, and try a little artful layering? You can layer bracelets as well (just ask Dwyn), and Spring is a great time to start! What are you waiting for?
