Statement pendants! Are they the next big thing?

Statement pendants are a current jewelry trend, according to a recent issue of Jewelry Making Daily (Interweave). I find that very interesting, because I’ve been making, and wearing them for years! Does that make me fashion forward?

As the article explains, “For spring and summer, pendants of all shapes, sizes, and configurations of materials, on very long strands of beads, chains, or leather cords”. Long lengths are definitely in, but I’m most comfortable with the 30-34″ range. Of course, the runways will always exaggerate and go longer, but those skinny models, don’t need to worry about the daily logistics! Imagine this! You exit the restaurant door, trailing your long, flowing, statement pendant necklace behind you? Suddenly, you come to a complete stop! Horrified, as you realize that your necklace is caught in the door!!! I guess a handsome stranger could come to your rescue, but really? More likely a toad, pushing his way through, then breaking your precious necklace! Sigh!

Anyway, back to the practical side of statement pendants. I don’t know about you, but I’ve given, and taken many pendant workshops. Both my Freeform Peyote Beaded Bead, and Birdhouse Pendants, could be turned into statement pendants (as could any of my bead embroidered ones). Just finish them with a string of beads, stones, or even a simple chain. What you need to remember, is that the pendant is the star, and the hanging device, just a bit player! Its only purpose, is to make the pendant look good!

Metal clay, bead embroidery, freeform peyote, lampwork beads, resin, polymer clay, wire wrapped stones, fibre collage, bead weaving, talismans, lockets, soutache, Asian knotting, and even micro macrame would work as statement pendants!

Chain and leather are easy, and very economical solutions (although you will need to remember to add a bail)! Switch out your pendants as the mood strikes you, but don’t discount the other options. I’m just too lazy to whip up a new necklace for every pendant. In my defence, I teach many pendant classes, but I’m happiest when I can wear something quickly!

Now is the time to jump on the statement pendants train! Dig to the bottom of your jewelery box, or even finish off something you started in one of the BeadFX classes! But don’t forget to add a long, skinny chain, or necklace of some sort! Don’t let your pieces just lie there! Get them out and use them!!!!
