Enjoy the Dog Days of Summer!

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘dog days of summer’, but did you know it has nothing to do with our canine friends? The phrase actually refers to the position of Sirius (the dog star) in the summer sky. The star is at its highest between mid-July to late-August which coincides with the hottest and most humid temperatures. In any case, keep your dogs well watered! Our mid-August classes feature a wide range of jewellery making techniques and BeadFX is a great place to cool off from the summer heat! Pamela Kearns is teaching how to do bead mosaic in the …

Karo Bead Wrap

This project is by Martina Junova – designing for Preciosa-Ornela – the manufacturers of the Karo bead. This is a nice simple design that highlights the square shape and variety of colours in a Boho-Chic design that is simple to do, easy to vary, and can be adapted to the materials you have on hand.     Find the Karo beads here: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=947_1286 And in the event that you don’t have any 10/0 rocailles (seedbeads) on hand: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=858_202 The Ripple bead, for the closure is here: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=947_954 Lots of cord choices: Waxed Cotton or maybe something else appeals? http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=864 And …

Karo Beads & Druzy Cabochons

At the opposite ends of the beading spectrum, we have the tight cohesive look of small beads and clever designs taking advantage of the intricate shapes of the different beads in an almost mathematical approach, and at the other end is the loose and free-form approach of the using whatever and whenever, free-form shapes and flowing forms. And yet – somehow – these two aesthetics manage to merge in pieces that use free-form cabochons and intricately crafted beaded bezels. Whether your style is precise and controlled, or serendipitous happenstance – we have the beads to make you happy. This week …

What is a maker?

Are you a maker? I know that I certainly am!! I’ve never liked the crafter term, because I think that it actually dumbs down all of our hard work. But lately, I have been hearing the maker term, and that’s something I can really get behind! Okay, crafters are makers, but then so are artists! As are calligraphers, carvers, bookmakers, knitters, potters, embroiderers, quilters, and jewelers. Professional or not, the list goes on an on, yet many are lumped into the crafter box. It’s time to get out of that particular box!! It must be serious, because we even had …

August is feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!

When I think of summer, I think of watermelons, iced tea and Caribbean-style music with a strong beat. It’s good to get out and have fun! Problem is – really high heat and humidity and I don’t mix well; I like the air conditioning! If you’re feeling the need to create and need air conditioning, then come on into BeadFX In fact, the classroom is so cool, you may want to bring a light sweater or wrap! Our open sessions are a perfect time to work on unfinished projects or start new projects over conversations with fellow enthusiasts. Early-August classes …

Trend Spotting – Top 3 Trends we see right now

Sometimes, the coincidences pile up so fast you think to yourself – there’s a trend here. And I’ll tell you what we are seeing in terms of what people are interested in right now in jewelry crafting!   Matte – Matte finish comes and goes, and right now – it’s in. Matte, particularly in stone – which adds an extra step to the process – as the stone is polished, and then matted. I’ve always been fond of matte in particular colours – i.e. Black – I like the contrast it provides – and rose quartz looks particularly nice in …

Bead soup is delicious!

Not only that, but bead soup contains zero calories! Doesn’t that sound impossibly fantastic? I must confess that I actually stole the bead soup idea from one of Dwyn’s recent Instagram posts, for beadfxbeads (it also posted our Facebook page). She was making a video for the store, but had a leetle beading accident, and ended up with a pile of bead soup! Okay, she didn’t call it an accident, but the story sounds better that way. LOL! Anyway, one lucky reader quickly guessed the right answer, and ended up with the pile, so all is good! Bead soup for …

Spread your Creative Wings!

You can cultivate creativity – you don’t need to be born with it. According to WikiHow, broadening your knowledge is one way of fostering creativity. For example, you have an idea for a bracelet that you want to create. If the bracelet is metal, do you need to know how to solder? If it is made of beads, what beads will work best and how can you assemble it? Like many people, you head to YouTube to check out the techniques. Yea, you found something! Unfortunately, the video isn’t in focus; the sound is muffled and you can’t ask questions. …

Forgotten Objects: To use or not to use!

Using forgotten objects in your beading and jewelery is an art! That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it! Of course, I wouldn’t dare to suggest that you just use forgotten objects, but it certainly is fun trying to combine them with new stones, chains and findings from BeadFX. I’ve been doing that for years! Resin, intuitive bead embroidery, then more recently with fabric collage, slow stitch, and Stitch Meditations. But what about talismans? I love forgotten objects, found objects, organic elements, pre-owned, pre-loved, and vintage. Fabric dyed with rust, is a real treat, yet I’m still tempted by boiled …
