Huicholing

Huichol, Huicholing. To Huichol. Huichol has become a verb around here – we use it to describe the process of covering something with beads. It started when we started carrying the Beadswax, and it is now just part of our lexicon. So recently I found this artist – Jan Huling – who is working in a similar vein. She calls herself a “beadist” – a term that I find very appealing because it is so open-ended, and she makes wonderful surface designs with beads using thin lines of glue and pre-strung beads, which she lays down on the glue and …

Such fun we had!

Such fun we had last Saturday! A demo by the talented team of Karina Guevin and Cedric Ginart – demonstrating making one of their signature glass goblets for a bus-load of excited collectors! Who knew we could pack so many into the studio! Celebrity glass blower Laura Donefer and renowned glass artist Susan Edgerley were also in attendance. These world-class artists put Canada on the map in the glass world! Plus – they are all super-nice people!   Karina taught a class here at BeadFX – watch our calendar for more potential classes to come!

Arcos et Minos, par Puca!(tm)

Something about these new additions to the shaped-bead family make me feel oh so French, dahling! And you just have to have a leetle browse on pinterest, no? to see what fabulous designs are happening with these new beads, n’est pas? Some of the designs are tres clever, and make excellent use of combining the shapes to make very sophisticated designs from very simple elements. Well – that’s about it for me for my high-school French – but these enticing little shapes are designed to work together, the cylindrical Minos snuggling into the centre curve of the curvy Arcos. Here’s …

You’re not going to believe what they called this turtle

This week – we have a new selection of stamps for you – the ImpressArt stamps are top quality and one of our most popular products. You tell us you love these stamps – and we agree! They are made from hardened carbon tool steel, precision cut for crisp impressions, and designed to last! You can stamp them on metals from aluminum to copper to brass to sterling, or if you work in softer materials, there is no reason why you can’t use them on polymer clay, or metal clay before firing. Or after firing. Both works! Speaking of metal …

Somebody Pinch me!

Well – actually – don’t please. Pinch these beads instead. These are pinch beads – happy little glass beads that are pinched into a sort of triangle shape in profile. We have some new “old stock” beads And if that doesn’t make you as happy as a clam, then maybe these clam/scallop/sea shell beads will. or something in a nuggety random beach pebble kind of shape? Oh, and hey – remember these? They’re baaaaack! Now in packs of 5 or 10, you can make multiple pendants or design something over the top! As always – there is interesting new stuff …

Time for some Travel – Time Travel!

Most everyone has packed up their swimwear, bug spray and half-completed beading projects and headed out to the cottage for one last blast of summer. The city is half empty, and the traffic would be not too bad, except that the only other folks that haven’t left town are the construction folks. BTW – if you are driving to us west on Eglinton – don’t. Just don’t. Come along St. Clair instead. (Or use one of the apps that routes you around construction and traffic. I use Waze. It’s pretty good. ) While everyone is headed to the cottage, and …

Sweet, Juicy Nib-Bits

What could be a better way to celebrate the summer than with sweet and juicy nib-bits? Not nib-bits of corn, but this new bead shape. It is a two hole wedge shape new from Matubo and designed by Nela Kabelova. The shape is, in fact, a little reminiscent of candy corn!   Also new this week are some fancy metal buttons that remind me of Plumeria blooms. Buttons, in addition to their use for actually fastening things, are great for toggles and can also be used in other ways – as decorative elements or connectors. They are particularly nice …
