Adding Gemstone Accents to Enamel (3 day class)

July 10, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 5:30 pm

Cdn $245.00 +Kit fee: $50, payable to the instructor the day of the class.

Course outline: In this class with Christine Woollacott, students will take their enamelling skills to the next level and learn how to incorporate bezel- set gemstone accents into their Champleve enamel designs. Students will use fine silver metal clay to form a base for an enamelled design. In addition to kiln enamelling techniques, students will learn how to fuse silver elements, how to create secure connections using rivets, and how to successfully bezel-set a gemstone. This is a technique-driven class, though design considerations for future projects will be discussed.

Note: This class is scheduled Monday, July 10 (11am – 5:30pm); Tuesday, July 11 (11am – 5:30pm); and Thursday, July 13 (11am – 5pm).

Skill level: Advanced

Prerequisite: Experience working with art clay silver. Previous metal working experience would be beneficial.

Technique: Use simple gem-setting techniques to add colourful accents to enamel jewellery.

Bring to class:

  • Fine silver metal clay of your choice
  • Personal metal clay tools (important tools include slats, favourite texture sheets, pin tools, files and sanding foam)
  • 22ga Fine silver sheet for colour testing. This can be made into a simple charm if the student desires. Fine silver sheet can be purchased as needed from BeadFX as the class progresses and does not need to be purchased beforehand. It would be very useful to bring any scrap fine silver to the class. Sterling silver cannot be used as a substitute.
  • Ceramic paint palette
  • An unused, natural hair brush as tiny as you can find ? 000 or smaller. It is more important to have a small bush than to have a natural hair brush. Synthetic fiber will do if natural hair is unavailable, though it needs to be at least 3/0 or smaller!
  • Green Scrub Pad (e.g. Scotch Brite)
  • Burnishing tool (either agate or metal is fine)
  • Personal sketchbook and pens/pencils

Gemstones: The following is a list of the 4mm calibrated gemstones I have available for purchase. The gemstones come with a 4mm fine silver setting and 1 inch of 20 gauge silver wire. If students know they would like a particular gemstone, they should inform me of their preference by email (wchristi47@gmail.com). My gemstone stock is somewhat limited – I generally have 6-8 stones of each type in my inventory.
