Bezel Setting Rounded Cabochons (2 days)

July 20 @ 9:30 am - July 21 @ 4:30 pm

Cdn $190.00

Course outline: In this class with Christine Woollacott, students will create simple jewellery decorated with sterling silver settings to showcase a favourite cabochon. Students will be introduced to using a jewellers saw-frame, silver soldering, bezel setting, and metal polishing techniques. Students will use fine silver bezel wire to form a custom-shaped bezel for a cabochon of their choice. Cabochons should not be larger than 40mm in diameter, and should have no corners. This course is suitable for learning to set cabochons made from gemstone, glass, or enamel.

This is a two-day class and will take place Saturday, July 20, 9:30am – 5:00pm, and Sunday, July 2, 11:00am – 4:30pm.

Skill level: Beginner

Prerequisite: None

Technique: This beginner course will cover the mechanics of using a jewellers saw-frame, silver soldering, bezel setting, and metal polishing.

Bring to class:

  • Fine silver bezel wire, or Fine Silver 3.25 mm Round Wire (that will be rolled out into bezel wire during the class). The length required is cabochon-specific, and so the material does not necessarily need to be purchased before the class.
  • 20ga Sterling Silver sheet. Once again, the material is cabochon-specific. There needs to be enough sheet for the cabochon to rest upon. Copper or brass sheet can be substituted for silver, if desired.
  • Rounded cabochon (Cabochons should not be more than 25mm in diameter, or be less than 4mm. The cabochon should be rounded in shape and have no corners. The material of the cabochon could be made from stone, glass, enamel, or ceramic. No plastic, please.)
  • Recommended tools will be discussed during the class, but students should feel free to bring any metalsmithing tools they may already have such as files, or jewellery pliers. Class tools will be available for use within the metal studio.
  • Flat bezel-pusher (no groove on the tip)
  • Burnisher
  • Fine needle files (4-cut is preferred)
  • Sketchbook and pencil
  • Optional: Visual aids such as optivisors or magnifying glasses
  • Optional: Feel free to bring personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, or particle masks.
  • As these are full-day classes, please bring a lunch. Coffee and cold drinks are available.
