Copper Knit and Foldformed Necklace

September 23 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cdn $75.00 +Kit fee: $5, payable to the instructor the day of the class.

Course outline: Make a complete necklace in a full day of wire and metal fun! A couple of years ago I created a necklace that incorporated my various obsessions – copper wire, Viking knit and foldforming. It ended up in the TBS calendar and I wear it constantly and receive many comments on it. Join me for the day and walk away with a completed version of the necklace I designed. I suggest that its better to come to class with a little knowledge of both techniques but, if you’ve never done Viking knit or foldforming before, you are still welcome. For those of you who’ve taken foldforming with me in the past, this is the next step in your metalworking journey! Note: a kit is required; see details below.

Part One – Viking Knit

Learn the ancient technique of Viking knitting on the modern and wonderful Lazee Daizee knitter. We will create a copper necklace that we will complete in class. This piece will be the base for the focal bead well be foldforming after lunch.

Part Two – Foldforming

This technique is acknowledged as the first new metalworking technique to have been created in two centuries! It is very easy to use a microtorch to heat folded metal, hammer it and forge gorgeous three dimensional shapes that can be incorporated into earrings, necklaces and bracelets. We will be creating a Reuger fold piece that will be the focal bead on our knitted necklace.

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Prerequisite: Some knowledge in Viking Knit and Foldforming preferred but not essential

Technique: Viking Knit, Foldforming metalwork

Bring to class: Bring your own Lazee Daizee knitter (also available at BeadFX), 22 or 24 ga natural copper wire (uncoated), end caps and a clasp of your choice. If you have a heavy riveting hammer please bring that as well as a bench block. The afternoon session can get a bit noisy, so sometimes headache medicine is essential.
