Hot Connections: Connecting Components

Course outline: We have seen how versatile soldering circles is, now let us move on to connecting those circles together and adding other components. The first project will be a pair of earrings constructed from concentric sterling silver hoops. Next we will move on to fabricating and attaching embellishments to stacking rings, and setting posts on earrings. Note: a kit is required; see details below.

In order to create our components we will explore the use of mandrels, bail making pliers, disk cutters, stamps and metal shears. Supplies for additional jewellery (sterling silver wire, gold-filled wire, sterling silver sheet, bezel cups and cabochons) will be available for purchase from the instructor.

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Prerequisite: Hot Connections 1 or experience soldering with a micro torch. Introduction to Sawing and Piercing or experience using a jeweller’s saw is an asset but not a requirement.

Technique: Fabricating jewellery that requires more than one solder join

Bring to class: Any metalworking tools that the student likes to work with. Please wear clothes that can get dirty and bring an apron if you have one. As this is a full day class, please bring a lunch. Coffee and cold drinks will be provided.

  • Some classes have associated kit fees, please check class details to see where applicable. Some kit fees are payable to the store, some to the instructor and may be cash only in that case.
  • For some studio classes, those using fire-breathing torches and fast spinny things a waiver must be signed acknowledging you have experience or training in their use, and we will ensure you have training to work safely!
  • Some classes have age requirements. Students MUST be 18 years or older in order to be able to take any of our lampworking, soldering, fusing, and some metalsmithing classes.

Class Cancellation Policy:

  • If you need to cancel, please let us know 5 days prior to the class. Cancellations made later than that will forfeit the class deposit or fee.
  • We may re-schedule or cancel classes if we do not receive the minimum number of bookings, or in case of bad weather or instructor illness. In this case, you will be notified and the fees will be refunded or issued as store credit.

sterling silver wire to make 2 pair of multi-hoop earrings, 8+ earring wires, 3 stacking rings, a piece of sterling silver sheet (1"x 2") for ring adornments and post earrings, a bezel cup and stone for a ring.
