Line Folding Sheet Metal

Course outline: This class with Liz Kennedy is an introduction to line fold forming of metal. You will make the folds and hammer your metal then anneal it with a torch so it can be opened. Shears will be used to cut the metal into the shapes you design. You will trim file and buff the pieces. If desired a patina can be applied. You can make whatever you choose from your metal: bracelet, pendant , earrings or any combination.

Skill level: Beginner

Prerequisite: N/A

Technique: An introduction to line, fold forming of sheet metal. Cutting the metal into shapes of your choice with shears. Hammering, texturing/stamping the metal, opening a fold. Annealing metal using a torch. Use of punch pliers. Applying patina to metal. Forming your own wire clasp if you choose.

Bring to class: Ear protection. Ear wires if they are making earrings. If they have them: Metal shears, chain nose, flat nose and round nose pliers, flush cutter, leather or rubber mallet, ruler, thin Sharpie marker, planishing hammer. Some of these will be available for use by students if they do not have them.

Kit Fee:
$15 payable to the instructor the day of the class.
Kit Includes:
6" x 2" piece of 24 or 26 gauge copper sheet. Jump rings, wire to make a clasp. Instructor tools during class time. Paper to use for design. Ear wires are not included in your kit.

  • Payment is required in advance for registration and may be done on-line at the time of registration or in-person at the store.
  • Some classes have associated kit fees, please check class details to see where applicable. Some kit fees are payable to the store, some to the instructor and may be cash only in that case.
  • For some studio classes, those using fire-breathing torches and fast spinny things a waiver must be signed acknowledging you have experience or training in their use, and we will ensure you have training to work safely!
  • Some classes have age requirements. Students MUST be mature and responsible to work safely to be allowed to take some of our lampworking, soldering, fusing, and some metalsmithing classes.

Class Cancellation Policy:

  • If you need to cancel, please let us know 5 days prior to the class. Cancellations made later than that will forfeit the class deposit or fee.
  • We may re-schedule or cancel classes if we do not receive the minimum number of bookings, or in case of bad weather or instructor illness. In this case, you will be notified and the fees will be refunded or issued as store credit.
