Viking Knit: Single and Multi-strand Designs

March 11 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cdn $100.00

Course outline: Students will learn the basics of making Viking-knit chain with the wire of their choice under the tutelage of artist and instructor Christine Woollacott. Single, double, and triple Viking knit will be demonstrated for different looks. Multi-chain projects and two techniques for drawing down the woven chain will be discussed. This is a technique class. While a variety of projects will be shown, students may, or may not finish during the class.

Skill level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: Students must be comfortable working with wire, and be able to make wrapped loops.

Technique: Learn how to weave Viking Knit chains for single-strand or multi-strand designs.

Bring to class:

  • Lazee Daizee Viking Knit Wire Weaving Tool or kit
  • 24ga or 26ga wire (para wire, artistic wire, dead soft sterling silver, dead soft gold filled, fine silver, or niobium are welcome)
  • This will be the bulk of the wire used. The length of wire needed will depend on whether the chain is made from single, double, or triple Viking knit, as well as the finished length of chain that is desired. I recommend starting with one spool, and going from there. I would recommend doing testers in cheaper wire before going on to work with precious metals. This way the length of wire needed for a project can be calculated.
  • 22ga wire (para wire, artistic wire, dead soft sterling silver, dead soft gold filled, fine silver, or niobium are welcome). The length is dependant on the length of finished chain that is desired.
  • Wooden or plastic draw-plate with a variety of hole sizes (4mm and larger)
  • At least two Cones or End Caps (the number and style will depend on the project)
