Fun with Freeform!

The fact that I have fun with freeform, is probably no surprise to most of you. I bead it, I stitch it, then sometimes even combine the two! It’s an intuitive way of working, that allows you to create, without following a traditional pattern. It is a fairly free way of working, but still requires a certain amount of order. Without that, there would be chaos! This one, entitled “Worms”, is a little chaotic, but it was an experiment, that just kept on giving. I still love it!! When I create, I let my mind flow free, but I’m always …

Learn to break the rules!

Are you a rule breaker? Are you one of those people who, if they give you an inch, you take a mile? Alternatively, do you live within the rules and not venture out of the ‘box’? Does the word ‘freeform’ make you squirm with fear! My first venture with freeform anything was a big step. As a seed beader – especially with peyote – I felt comfort knowing that my beads would line up with perfect precision. I knew what to expect when I was planning the next row, and then the next.  I have since discovered that freeform peyote …

10+ and QCC at BeadFX

(and 20% off Czech seedbeads and Kumi stuff for one week only) Silver-Filled 10+ Wire from ParaWire You asked, we answered. Ok, our first answer was “huh? Whut?” But then we looked it up, and decided that the folks who were asking were on to something! “ParaWire’s 10+ silver-filled wire is the perfect replacement for working with solid silver wire. 10% fine silver content, making it behave just like sterling silver wire – solderable, and patina-able – but for a fraction of the price of sterling or solid fine silver.” Well – hot damn! Sounds like a winner to me. …

Denim Dreams: What do they mean to you?

I believe that denim dreams are a state of mind! We wear them, we love them, but do we accessorize them? Now, that is the question? I know that denim dreams come in many colours, but I’ll refer to the blue variety, for this blog post! I grew to love it in my school days, so that’s what I’m going to talk about today!! Today’s denim is a heck of a lot more comfortable (but we were kids, so what the heck did we know?), and you can even buy them with ragged holes!! In my day, you needed to …

Mix it up!

When I say mix it up, what do you suppose I mean? I’m not really sure, but it’s a subject that we’re going to explore! I call myself a Mixed-Up Media Artist, and that’s because I like to play with just about anything. Beads, paint, alcohol inks, stitch, fabric, resin, concrete, paper, stones. Also, enamel, polymer clay, felting, metal, rusty objects, and even driftwood. But is there anything else out there that I’m missing? Well, I’m not really into knotting (except for pearls), have never done any lampwork, and have had minimal experience with wire wrapping, metal clay, and metalwork …

Carve out creative time for yourself!

There are so many demands on our time that it can be stressful to maintain hectic schedules. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and say, ‘I need to do something for me’. Recharging your batteries is required just to keep up! Our mid-June classes feature an array of jewellery making techniques from seed beading with Pamela Kearns, to chainmaille with Marilyn Gardiner and working with cement with Ann Shewan. In the midst of all the classes are open sessions where you can come in, relax and enjoy coffee and conversation as you work on your projects. As …
