Sweet Summer Color

Sweet summer colors, like fresh flowers, summery prints, sherbet, fruit – colors that are both soft and intense at the same time! From Preciosa – Natural Pink and Natural Lilac. These glass seed beads are not dyed. And they come in size 10/0s, size 8/0s, size 6/0s, and the monster size 2/0. Or how about these dreamy Bondeli superduo colors? Available for a limited time only, these matte finish colours are as summery as swimming holes and hot dogs. Or Adirondack chairs and BBQ. Or sunburn and bug bites. 😉       Hmmm – that coral color reminds me …

To Write or Stitch: What’s a girl to do?

Write or stitch, that’s certainly a dilemma! What the heck would you do? No paper is sacred! I write on yellow post-its, envelope scraps, the odd napkin, books (shudder), and even the back of invoices. The real trick is to figure out how to catalogue those notes, before they get swept out in the trash, but while they’re still current. I love to write, but have never had a great desire to journal about anything! Nope, not kidding!! But, I do confess to being a rabid writer of notes. You know, a scribble here, a scribble there, but then you …

Slow down Summer with a class

Are you feeling a little rushed? Are you thinking that summer is half over and September routines are creeping back into your thoughts? Don’t worry about the future (it will be here soon enough without borrowing time from it) and live in the here and now. Mindfulness is the practise of being present in what you are doing – whether doing chores, dining or learning. It is single-tasking. Classes are one way to help you clear your mind of other priorities and allow you to focus on yourself and learning a new skill. Our late-July classes feature four terrific opportunities …

Labra-Oodles

Not Labradoodles – but oodles of Labradorite! I have to tell you – Labradorite is one of our most popular stones. I think the thrill of finding good labradorite is unbeatable, and it is quietly beautiful with flashes of brilliance, as opposed to flashy and in your face. Like having a secret super power! There is something mystical and magical about it’s misty depths and inner glow. This week, in addition to our existing variety of beads, we have some breathtaking One-of-a-Kind Labradorite pendants. And I do mean breath-taking! There is a legend, according the the interwebs, (so it must …

Secrets and Treasures: We all have them!

Secrets and treasures, but what would the world be without them? A very dull place indeed! Who doesn’t have special little bits and pieces, hidden around their home? Do you take them out and fondle them, or just feel safe, knowing that they’re hidden away from prying eyes? I say enjoy them! Wallow in the memories! Air them out, let them free, dream about them, but keep them close to your heart! What better way to do that, than to make an amulet pouch? I’ve been thinking about amulet, or talisman pouches for a while, but hadn’t settled on how …

Hammering, texturing and casting with Robyn Cornelius

Robyn Cornelius is one of our favourite instructors at BeadFX and for good reasons! 1. Robyn’s classes accommodate students of ALL experience levels! 2. Her designs are fun and wearable! 3. Robyn is fun to be around! 4. These classes are perfect for a destination vacation! Canadian instructor Robyn Cornelius has a degree in Fine Arts majoring in Jewelry and Metals and believes in taking as many classes with as many teachers as possible to continue growing in her art field. She has her own custom design studio in Edmonton, Alberta, called Little Rock Jewelry Studio. Robyn’s method of teaching …

Catch you on the Diopside

Aren’t these gorgeous? Emeralds wish they looked this good – in fact – they are green with envy. But not green enough! These are Diopside – and they are the green that makes you think of mother earth, emerald forests, jungle escapes and hidden glades. This week is another treasure trove of Mother Nature’s gifts. For instance, these Elytra – (beetle wing covers) – we have them with holes and without now. They are a traditional craft item from India and Thailand, and are sourced from wood boring beetles that have passed on after their natural life span of about …

Canadian Content: Plus, a little U.S.!

Canadian content is a must, due to the fact that we just celebrated Canada Day! I hope you don’t mind that it’s all about me!! I worked on Saturday, but then had three whole days off in a row! No Canada Day celebrations for me, but I did provide all of the Canadian content in this blog post! It was a lazy, but busy weekend! I’ve felt rushed lately, so needed a staycation. I did nothing that I had to do, but everything that I wanted to do. Reading, napping, stitching, beading, visiting friends, and even a little TV watching. It’s …

Take a mini-vacation with a class!

Creativity doesn’t take a vacation – in fact, it can be triggered by a simple change in routine such as taking time for yourself. Our mid-July classes are chock-a-block full of creativity and fun! Many of them are also suitable for younger students – a great way to introduce a new generation to ‘handmade’! Naomi Smith will take you through the steps to create your traditional indigenous flat bag. Chainmaille enthusiasts will love classes with both Marilyn Gardiner and Gillian Clarke. Ann Shewan will teach you how to drill small stones and pebbles – great items to pick-up on your next …
