Artful Layering: Let the fun begin!

Artful layering is something that I just made up this morning. Someone, somewhere has certainly used the term before, but possibly not about jewelery? The almighty Google did find a few things, but I believe that my jewelery reference could be pristine! I just couldn’t find another one! I don’t mean the popular Boho look, but something simpler. I’m talking about layering two or three coordinated necklaces, of different lengths. Say a silver chain, with a fibre mixed media piece, with a lovely lampwork bead. Funny, I wore that combo on Monday!! Serendipity, and not planned! That aha moment, when …

April 2018 Bead Mat Update: Just muddling around!

Some might say that my April 2018 bead mat update is a real mess! Not so, but perhaps I should explain! I’ve been kidnapped by the joy of Stitch Meditations! Thank you Liz Kettle, for enabling me!! I started the project in March, and figured that I could fit them in between my other projects. But they are taking over my world! Why is that? Echoes of my stitching past, seem to be jockeying for space with my beads, and I’m enjoying myself immensely! Are you interested in joining me in this adventure? If so, I’ll be holding an introductory …

Embrace the imperfections!

Embrace the imperfections, then take time to smell the roses! No one is perfect, so why put yourself down, for something that is virtually unattainable? I posted a partially stitched and embroidered stone, on my Instagram account (amd_artfuldreamer) this morning. I was thinking about how difficult it was to stitch a perfect rock. It’s awkward in your hands, there is no give, and it’s heavy to work with. So, I decided to embrace the imperfections, and just go with the flow! Threads are hanging, the stitches and edges aren’t perfect, yet the colours are sea-like and dreamy! I love the …

Sculptural beadwork – 3-D and fabulous!

What do you think of, when I say sculptural beadwork? I think art!!! Although most of us consider beading to be a type of wearable art, sculptural beadwork is something entirely different! Now that doesn’t mean that jewelery is not art, it’s just that we’re more conditioned to think of objects as more sculptural. In my own small way, I’ve been playing around with this idea, for a while now. Mainly with my dolls, but more recently, with stitching, and beading a small beach stone (more about that, in future blog posts). Freeform peyote, and intuitive bead embroidery, are obvious …

Polymer clay play! Experiment if you dare!

My experiments with polymer clay play, continue in a haphazard kind of way! I love to experiment, but in fact, usually end up with a motley collection of techniques. Some work, and some don’t! I want to actually make something exciting out of my polymer clay. Do I really want to make a bunch of beads? Perhaps not, but there must be something that I can make!! In the spirit of experimentation, I’ll continue along the exploration path, until I come up with something that I’m satisfied with. Okay, I need to say this, polymer clay play is not terribly …

March 2018 Bead Mat Update: A study in contrasts!

I started thinking about my March 2018 bead mat update a couple of weeks ago! However, I wasn’t able to settle down and do anything about it until now! Horrors! I almost missed updating you!! March has been a very busy month! I’m like a butterfly, flitting around, but not really settling in any one place for long. As I’ve said before, I need focus! I may have found a way to clear my head and corral my mind a little. I believe that I showed you my Stitch Meditations before, but I’ve started adding beads to some of them. …

What ever happened to? Fads or passing fancies?

Have you ever considered what ever happened to some of your favourite beads, and jewelery techniques? Did the faeries steal them, or did they simply fall out of fashion? I blame an awful lot on magazines, because they need to keep flogging trends. New products and techniques, sell magazines!!! There is nothing wrong with that, but what’s wrong with the older products and techniques? What’s up with Soutache Embroidery? What is Soutache braid? According to Interweave, “it’s basically a flat decorative trim or ribbon that’s traditionally used for concealing a seam on clothing”, but it could also be used to …

Creative Musings of an Inquisitive Mind!

What would be the definition of creative musings? If a musing is a period of reflection or thought, then a creative musing is a period of creative reflection or thought. Do you agree? My muse brings focus and light to my creativity, but she also brings dark! Light balances darkness, and darkness balances light! You cannot have one without the other. Sometimes, when I talk about creative musings, it’s because I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to write about! So, my muse helps me to make stuff up!!! She’s very versatile, but not limited to fibre, paper, and …

Floral Jewelery: A harbinger of spring!

I don’t know about you, but floral jewelery always reminds me of spring! In this part of the country, at this time of the year, we exist somewhere between winter and spring. One day spring, and the next, thrust rudely back into winter! Will it be rain, snow, or freezing rain? Granted, the temperature is more moderate, and some days it’s even warm enough to run errands, in a light jacket! Spring is coming, you can feel it in the air, and the birds are even tweeting about it! Call me sentimental, but I love floral jewelery! If you ask …

February 2018 Bead Mat Update: A technique extravaganza!

Is my February 2018 bead mat update more of the same? Or is it? Only my readers will know!!! You know that it’s February in Canada, when you get winter, spring, winter, spring, and giant potholes! It’s hard to know what to wear, but I’m certainly glad that we’re in the spring phase right now, for however long it lasts.   I’ve never really liked February in Toronto, because in my home city of Vancouver, you would already be seeing signs of spring. Ha! They got snow last week!!! I know, it won’t last long, and the bulbs will be …
