Mix it up!

When I say mix it up, what do you suppose I mean? I’m not really sure, but it’s a subject that we’re going to explore! I call myself a Mixed-Up Media Artist, and that’s because I like to play with just about anything. Beads, paint, alcohol inks, stitch, fabric, resin, concrete, paper, stones. Also, enamel, polymer clay, felting, metal, rusty objects, and even driftwood. But is there anything else out there that I’m missing? Well, I’m not really into knotting (except for pearls), have never done any lampwork, and have had minimal experience with wire wrapping, metal clay, and metalwork …

Late Breaking News: Of the publishing kind!

I should have shared this late breaking news earlier today, but I simply forgot to include it in my earlier blog post! Dwyn wanted me to call it a “Hot Flash”, but I just wasn’t going there!  LOL! I’m excited to announce that two of my articles, that include six different jewelry pieces, have been published in the Summer edition (out in June), of the Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine!!! This is a high-end, beautifully photographed, artsy, teaching, mixed media, jewelry magazine, and it fits right into my wheelhouse! The publisher is Stampington & Company. I simply love this magazine, and …

May 2019 Bead Mat Update: Freeform, stitch, and stories!

My May 2019 bead mat update is late in the month, but then so is spring in Toronto! But here it is, and believe it or not, we’ve even had a few, very nice days. Not enough yet, but you learn to take what you can get! Nothing is better, than spending time with enthusiastic students! I love every minute of it, and it’s even better if you have something to show at the end of the day. My Freeform Peyote Beaded Bead class, last Sunday, was no exception! Of course, none of the beads were finished in the class …

Playing Around and Finishing Up: True or False?

I’ve been playing around, but not finishing up all that many projects. It’s not because I don’t have any U.F.O.’s (unfinished objects), but rather that my mind has been occupied with other things. I do have stash enhancing projects! That’s what you call making stuff, that you add to your stash, to prepare for making other stuff, at some later date!! I’ve been doing that a lot! When spring calls, and I’d rather spend time out of doors, I tend to work on simple things. Like Gelli printing (mono-printing with a commercial gelatin-type plate), paper decorating, fabric altering, and all …

Beading Surfaces: What do you use?

When I talk about beading surfaces, what do you think of? I started beading the traditional way, with needle and thread (peyote, square stitch, right angle weave)! Then I branched out to stringing, done with crimps, and beading wire. Was that enough for me? Heck no! I joined the Bead Journal Project in 2008 (or so), then started beading on a heavy weight stabilizer, called Peltex (it stiffens the bills of baseball caps). Then, I discovered Lacy’s Stiff Stuff, Flexi-Firm, stiffened felt, and Good Felt! All good beading surfaces, but there’s more! I beaded on (or around) small beach stones, …

April 2019 Bead Mat Update: New, old, and UFO’s!

For my April 2019 Bead Mat Update, I want to discuss a few of the things that I’ve been working on lately! But what would you say if I told you that I’ve actually been thinking of many more projects? Sigh! There just isn’t enough time in anyone’s lifetime, to complete every idea my muse throws at me!! My brain hurts!! What’s a girl to do? So, for my April 2019 bead mat update, I’ll just show you what I’ve been doing lately! What do Resin, Beaded Art Dolls, and UFO’s have in common? Why, those are all workshops that …

Random Thoughts on the Season!

In your wildest random thoughts, did you ever wonder, how you would fill your time until the end of the year? Obviously not a problem for most people. Confession time, most of my gifts need to be wrapped early, due to mailing deadlines (don’t hate me!). By some miracle, what with the recent postal strike and all, my presents all made it to the correct places prior to the big day. I did mail early, and via Express Post, so I figured that they would be safe, and I was right. Relieved I am, but now all I need to …

Colour Crazy: The story continues!

I guess that you could say that I’m colour crazy! Not to mention, that I’m not in the least shy about it!! Okay, I did just buy a new black coat, and come to think of it, a new black vest as well. But black is such a practical colour for winter! After I finished my blog post from last week, I realized that my colour crazy story was not finished! I showed you some of my first Bead Journals, but didn’t show you the rest of that series (I made twelve of them). So, I’ll just finish them off, …

Colour Play – All the Way!

It’s only going to get colder, so colour play is extremely important at this time of the year! Why do we need dark and dismal, when we could take a bath in colour instead? I know it’s a strange topic for a post, but it’s something that popped into my head this morning! If you look at my wardrobe, you’ll see a lot of black, grey, and navy blue (but mostly denim these days). Is this a leftover from the corporate years (not the denim), or perhaps a personal choice? I love colour, but I don’t wear it that much, …

November 2018 Bead Mat Update: Texture & Contrast!

When talking about my November 2018 Bead Mat Update, I think more about the differences, and less about similarities! I love techniques! Yes I’ve told you that before, but this time my words are matched by my actions. Do you want to see? First up on my November 2018 Bead Mat update, is the bezelled cabochon that I talked about in my last blog post. I lifted the next two photos from that post!! Now here’s the update! I beaded some more, then glued the backing on, so all that’s left to do is bead the edging. But wait! What …
