Small gifts: Celebrating holiday traditions!

Are you going to make small gifts for the upcoming holidays? Have you started? Are you finished? Or are you in high panic mode? I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m panicking, but I am glad that my workshops for 2017, will be finished by the end of this week. I do love my students, but whew, now I can concentrate! Are you a maker, or a collector? I saw something recently on Facebook, that said that buying beads, and making things with beads, are two completely separate hobbies!!! I truly believe this! Do you? I make gifts, and I’m proud …

Handmade gifts! Is it better to give or receive?

“The time has come, the walrus said” to speak of handmade gifts! Should you start your holiday gifts early, or leave them until the last minute? A conundrum for sure, but both strategies have merit! Early gives you lots of time, and a certain amount of peace of mind. Late gifts you with an adrenaline rush, and also the chance to show off your latest skills (perhaps learned in a BeadFX workshop?). To help you get through the season, I also prescribe coffee, chocolate, and medicinal liquids! If you need a kick-start, there’s still time to take either a November, …

Beading woes! Is this the ending, or just the beginning?

Are you familiar with the subject of beading woes? I feel that finishing a project, brings on a certain kind of emptiness. It can only be satisfied, by starting another project. I don’t have many unfinished projects! I do have components, made for the sake of making! Stash is not the same as unfinished projects! They are teaching experiments! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!!! Freeform peyote bracelet finished – check! I will use it as a teaching sample (early 2018). Sad to finish, but I will work on another soon! Is that a new beginning? Freeform peyote …

Creative Play: Time, resin, and acrylic paints!

Creative play is a necessary part of my daily activities. I need more creative time!!!! Deadlines and daily life steal time, but instead of becoming complacent, I must figure out a way to balance my life more effectively. Facebook wastes time, but where else would I get all of that creative input, before changing out of my pajamas? I won’t give it up any time soon! I try not to get swallowed up by Pinterest and Instagram, despite the fact, that they’re extremely hard to resist! Enough of my whining! Let’s talk about Ice Resin, Iced Enamels, bezels and acrylic …

What’s on my bead mat – August edition!

What happened to summer? It’s certainly been hot and steamy, but how long will it last? Has anyone felt like doing any serious work? I’ve been lazing about, focusing on finishing off a few things, working on class samples, and dreaming up a few “Inspirations” for the store. The last time I tried to coat two of my larger alcohol ink projects in Ice Resin (a ceramic tile, and a small plate), I was quite disappointed. I followed all of the rules, but didn’t get complete coverage on my first try (once dry, the surface was pitted, and uneven). As …

Crazy for colour!

Ok, so I’m absolutely crazy about colour!!! Does that make me a bad person? No of course not, it just makes me a colourful one! Colour lights up my life, and has the power to chase away, any possible threats of grayer tomorrows! Although I’ve worshipped colour for years, it’s only now that I’m finally recognizing the fact that it’s totally necessary in my life. My uniform was heavy on basic black, during my corporate years, but my art has always been colour focused. Sure, I still wear the remnants of that uniform (it’s oh so practical, and hides a …

Let’s talk texture!

Texture is one of those things that we seem to take for granted. It’s all around us, but how often do we make a conscious effort to notice it? Raindrops on a lake, cracks in cement, rusty metal, peeling paint and rippling grasses, are all examples of textures in the great outdoors. Now let’s examine some ways to include texture in your work! Pair the creamy texture of pearls, with the soft sheen of silk. Match semi-precious stones, with fibre, wire, leather, buttons or metal. Create a collage of textured elements, and then add a smooth coat of resin. Or …
