June 2019 Bead Mat Update: Blue, with a dash of red!

Time for my June 2019 Bead Mat Update! I haven’t actually been doing a lot of beading, but I have a suspicion, that’s about to change!! I need to do some beading, but then there’s also Stitch Meditations, Ice Resin, and that giant package of Quick Cure Clay. What’s a girl to do? I’m not ready to expose my Quick Cure Clay to my blog readers yet, but it should be ready for a July unveiling. All I can say right now, is that it’s interesting to work with, is sticky, smells a bit, yet takes colour really well. It is …

Fun with Freeform!

The fact that I have fun with freeform, is probably no surprise to most of you. I bead it, I stitch it, then sometimes even combine the two! It’s an intuitive way of working, that allows you to create, without following a traditional pattern. It is a fairly free way of working, but still requires a certain amount of order. Without that, there would be chaos! This one, entitled “Worms”, is a little chaotic, but it was an experiment, that just kept on giving. I still love it!! When I create, I let my mind flow free, but I’m always …

Denim Dreams: What do they mean to you?

I believe that denim dreams are a state of mind! We wear them, we love them, but do we accessorize them? Now, that is the question? I know that denim dreams come in many colours, but I’ll refer to the blue variety, for this blog post! I grew to love it in my school days, so that’s what I’m going to talk about today!! Today’s denim is a heck of a lot more comfortable (but we were kids, so what the heck did we know?), and you can even buy them with ragged holes!! In my day, you needed to …

Mix it up!

When I say mix it up, what do you suppose I mean? I’m not really sure, but it’s a subject that we’re going to explore! I call myself a Mixed-Up Media Artist, and that’s because I like to play with just about anything. Beads, paint, alcohol inks, stitch, fabric, resin, concrete, paper, stones. Also, enamel, polymer clay, felting, metal, rusty objects, and even driftwood. But is there anything else out there that I’m missing? Well, I’m not really into knotting (except for pearls), have never done any lampwork, and have had minimal experience with wire wrapping, metal clay, and metalwork …

May 2019 Bead Mat Update: Freeform, stitch, and stories!

My May 2019 bead mat update is late in the month, but then so is spring in Toronto! But here it is, and believe it or not, we’ve even had a few, very nice days. Not enough yet, but you learn to take what you can get! Nothing is better, than spending time with enthusiastic students! I love every minute of it, and it’s even better if you have something to show at the end of the day. My Freeform Peyote Beaded Bead class, last Sunday, was no exception! Of course, none of the beads were finished in the class …

Playing Around and Finishing Up: True or False?

I’ve been playing around, but not finishing up all that many projects. It’s not because I don’t have any U.F.O.’s (unfinished objects), but rather that my mind has been occupied with other things. I do have stash enhancing projects! That’s what you call making stuff, that you add to your stash, to prepare for making other stuff, at some later date!! I’ve been doing that a lot! When spring calls, and I’d rather spend time out of doors, I tend to work on simple things. Like Gelli printing (mono-printing with a commercial gelatin-type plate), paper decorating, fabric altering, and all …

Long and Luscious: For the ears, of course!

It’s pretty bad when you start dreaming of long and luscious, seedbead earrings! I don’t have a lot of experience wearing long earrings, but I think that I’m tempted to try. My only real exposure to long earrings, were those giant Sterling Silver hoops, that I used to wear, and my freeform peyote earrings (I’ve even taught a class about them, but probably not on the schedule until the summer). Other than that, my earrings have been fairly subdued. I have been known to wear a pair, with single stones on a long chain, but other than that, nada! Even …

December 2018 Bead Mat Update: Greetings from this part of the world!

My December 2018 bead mat update came way too soon! How can it possibly be December 26th? Rats!! I’m not sure that I accomplished as much as I wanted to this year!!! Pillow from a friend. Nice and festive! Aren’t the goals we set for ourselves crazy? Sometimes they work, and at other times, they don’t. However, one thing that I do know, is that we never have time to do everything we want to do! The older we get, the seemingly busier we get, and that isn’t about to change!!!! So, we might as well just go with the …

Autumn Sparkles: Reflections on the season!

Though later than normal, autumn sparkles if you take a good look around you! I need to talk about beads, but I also want to talk about autumn leaves. Couldn’t this post be about both? I rarely work in autumn colours, but I actually created an entire Bead Journal Project (BJP) series, working with fallen leaves from 2014. I collected, pressed, and bead embroidered a series of 12 leaves (actually 13, but I didn’t like one of them). I’m really a blue/green type of girl, but I did slip in a couple of fall colours! All suitable for pendants, or …

Peyote Stitch: A dream of a stitch!

I must admit that peyote stitch is my favourite bead weaving stitch! I adore the simplicity of this stinking stitch! Believe it or not, I actually followed the rules, in the early days! The three bracelets shown below, illustrate the start of my addiction! The one with the bugle beads, was made in a class I took with Marilyn Parker & Maureen Warland (George Brown College), many, many years ago. I ripped that sucker out, many times, before finally getting with the program!!!! I did make one more bracelet, of this type, before vowing never again! Heh, heh, ladies…but I …
