December 2018 Bead Mat Update: Greetings from this part of the world!

My December 2018 bead mat update came way too soon! How can it possibly be December 26th? Rats!! I’m not sure that I accomplished as much as I wanted to this year!!! Pillow from a friend. Nice and festive! Aren’t the goals we set for ourselves crazy? Sometimes they work, and at other times, they don’t. However, one thing that I do know, is that we never have time to do everything we want to do! The older we get, the seemingly busier we get, and that isn’t about to change!!!! So, we might as well just go with the …

Autumn Sparkles: Reflections on the season!

Though later than normal, autumn sparkles if you take a good look around you! I need to talk about beads, but I also want to talk about autumn leaves. Couldn’t this post be about both? I rarely work in autumn colours, but I actually created an entire Bead Journal Project (BJP) series, working with fallen leaves from 2014. I collected, pressed, and bead embroidered a series of 12 leaves (actually 13, but I didn’t like one of them). I’m really a blue/green type of girl, but I did slip in a couple of fall colours! All suitable for pendants, or …

Peyote Stitch: A dream of a stitch!

I must admit that peyote stitch is my favourite bead weaving stitch! I adore the simplicity of this stinking stitch! Believe it or not, I actually followed the rules, in the early days! The three bracelets shown below, illustrate the start of my addiction! The one with the bugle beads, was made in a class I took with Marilyn Parker & Maureen Warland (George Brown College), many, many years ago. I ripped that sucker out, many times, before finally getting with the program!!!! I did make one more bracelet, of this type, before vowing never again! Heh, heh, ladies…but I …

Gifts from the beach: Traditional repurposing!

What do you think of when I say gifts from the beach? No, I don’t mean those expensive, kitschy items that you bring back as presents. I mean the real gifts! I wish I was close enough to the ocean, to say that my gifts from the beach, included a myriad of shells, but no, not this girl! As I live close to a very large lake (Lake Ontario), my gifts include beach glass, driftwood, and stones! Not only tangible gifts, but how about the gift of peace, sunshine, seabirds, exercise, fresh air, and serenity? I find beach walking to …

July 2018 Bead Mat Update: Oops it’s August!

When I sat down to write my July 2018 bead mat update, I realized that it would actually be posted in August! How the heck did that happen? The days are flying by too fast!! First up on my July 2018 bead mat update is the continuation of my Stitch Bits/Stitch Meditations series. The one on the top of the pile is my latest, #77! Whew! My plan is to make 100 of these, then decide what the heck I’m going to do with them. Stay tuned! I really needed some antique copper earrings, so wandered about BeadFX, hunting for …

Bead soup is delicious!

Not only that, but bead soup contains zero calories! Doesn’t that sound impossibly fantastic? I must confess that I actually stole the bead soup idea from one of Dwyn’s recent Instagram posts, for beadfxbeads (it also posted our Facebook page). She was making a video for the store, but had a leetle beading accident, and ended up with a pile of bead soup! Okay, she didn’t call it an accident, but the story sounds better that way. LOL! Anyway, one lucky reader quickly guessed the right answer, and ended up with the pile, so all is good! Bead soup for …

Earring Palooza: Let the making begin!

What exactly is an earring palooza? Well, I don’t really know, but as I have nothing else in the queue, I think that we should explore the subject! The definition of palooza is an exaggerated event. So, I guess an earring palooza is a crazy, earring making event? Of course, the logistics would be crazy, but wouldn’t it be fun? Even better if we could dream of holding it at BeadFX, close to all the necessary supplies! I love earrings but seem to wear the same ones over and over. Would that exclude me from the earring palooza? I hope …

May 2018 Bead Mat Update: Two steps back, one step forward!

My May 2018 bead mat update signals a return to my roots. Fibre has always been my first love, and I must admit that I’m enjoying the process immensely. Did my Stitch Meditations have anything to do with my current obsession with fibre? I certainly expect so! What if I combined fibre, beads, embroidery, felting, and natural elements? Isn’t that what I’m all about? My muse was whispering insistently, so I just had to shut her up!! This stitched stone has been sitting on the sidelines for a while, but I decided to finish it off with freeform peyote, just …

Statement pendants! Are they the next big thing?

Statement pendants are a current jewelry trend, according to a recent issue of Jewelry Making Daily (Interweave). I find that very interesting, because I’ve been making, and wearing them for years! Does that make me fashion forward? As the article explains, “For spring and summer, pendants of all shapes, sizes, and configurations of materials, on very long strands of beads, chains, or leather cords”. Long lengths are definitely in, but I’m most comfortable with the 30-34″ range. Of course, the runways will always exaggerate and go longer, but those skinny models, don’t need to worry about the daily logistics! Imagine …
