Mix it up!

When I say mix it up, what do you suppose I mean? I’m not really sure, but it’s a subject that we’re going to explore! I call myself a Mixed-Up Media Artist, and that’s because I like to play with just about anything. Beads, paint, alcohol inks, stitch, fabric, resin, concrete, paper, stones. Also, enamel, polymer clay, felting, metal, rusty objects, and even driftwood. But is there anything else out there that I’m missing? Well, I’m not really into knotting (except for pearls), have never done any lampwork, and have had minimal experience with wire wrapping, metal clay, and metalwork …

May 2019 Bead Mat Update: Freeform, stitch, and stories!

My May 2019 bead mat update is late in the month, but then so is spring in Toronto! But here it is, and believe it or not, we’ve even had a few, very nice days. Not enough yet, but you learn to take what you can get! Nothing is better, than spending time with enthusiastic students! I love every minute of it, and it’s even better if you have something to show at the end of the day. My Freeform Peyote Beaded Bead class, last Sunday, was no exception! Of course, none of the beads were finished in the class …

Playing Around and Finishing Up: True or False?

I’ve been playing around, but not finishing up all that many projects. It’s not because I don’t have any U.F.O.’s (unfinished objects), but rather that my mind has been occupied with other things. I do have stash enhancing projects! That’s what you call making stuff, that you add to your stash, to prepare for making other stuff, at some later date!! I’ve been doing that a lot! When spring calls, and I’d rather spend time out of doors, I tend to work on simple things. Like Gelli printing (mono-printing with a commercial gelatin-type plate), paper decorating, fabric altering, and all …

Beading Surfaces: What do you use?

When I talk about beading surfaces, what do you think of? I started beading the traditional way, with needle and thread (peyote, square stitch, right angle weave)! Then I branched out to stringing, done with crimps, and beading wire. Was that enough for me? Heck no! I joined the Bead Journal Project in 2008 (or so), then started beading on a heavy weight stabilizer, called Peltex (it stiffens the bills of baseball caps). Then, I discovered Lacy’s Stiff Stuff, Flexi-Firm, stiffened felt, and Good Felt! All good beading surfaces, but there’s more! I beaded on (or around) small beach stones, …

Resin Play and More!

What can I possibly say about resin play and more? You all know that I’m a mixed-up media person, but did you know that my cravings often come in waves? I simply cannot resist, when my muse whispers that I must go in an entire new direction. Okay, I’m not really going in a new direction, I’m just planning on taking an old direction, down a new path! I wish that I could say that I had lots of photos to show you, but right now most of my new ideas are just percolating in my brain. It’s a virtual …

Rocking a Collection: Let the buyer beware!

I feel like rocking a collection! I’ve done it before, and I think that it’s time to do it again!! Collections are funny things! You start with one item, that piece whispers to you, and all of a sudden, your studio space has shrunk exponentially! You’ll notice that I said “studio space”, because some have the luxury of actual space, others only have a closet, but most need to squeeze it out wherever they can. My studio started in my spare bedroom, but has since oozed out to the rest of my home. Is it any wonder that I feel …

March 2019 Bead Mat Update: This and that!

For my March 2019 Bead Mat Update, I’d like to show you what I’ve been playing with lately. Believe it or not, all of the jewelery pieces were created last weekend, but that’s not all! I’ve been futzing about with a big deadline, and also managed to meet my goal, with one whole day to spare. Colour me relieved!! I celebrated meeting the deadline with a nap, then went on to create some stuff. I do have another deadline on the horizon, but I’ll take care of that before the end of the week. My Artist’s Concrete was gathering dust, …

Creativity Check! What will spring bring?

It’s March, and it’s definitely time for a creativity check! The weather outside is not telling me that it’s spring, but my heart is still longing for it! I suffer from the winter doldrums, but not because of the cold! It’s because winter is just so long in this part of the world. I grew up in Vancouver, B.C., where signs of spring, start popping up in early February, while the rest of us just have freezing temperatures! Sigh! Back to the creativity check! February is finished, March is here, and I need to learn something new!!!! I’m going to …

February 2019 Bead Mat Update: Finishing is not all it’s cracked up to be!

Wow, my February 2019 Bead Mat Update came along way too fast! Is that because it’s a short month, or because of all of the crappy weather that we’ve been having? I wish that I could say that it’s been a productive month, but no, I don’t think that it was. I stayed inside, so you think that I would have accomplished an awful lot, but no, that’s not the case. Sigh! I had a private class scheduled on one of the days that BeadFX closed early, so I gave my student a choice a day earlier, and she decided …

Snowmaggedon and Related Activities!

I know that Snowmaggedon in Toronto (Tuesday), seems tame to places like Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Montreal! But, where ever you are, when it snows all day, mixed with wind, ice pellets, possible freezing rain, then rain, it’s a real mess! There’s too much traffic on the streets for proper snow removal, and not everyone who has a license, knows how to actually drive!!! When you pile ice, on top of snow, on top of older snow, you just get a real mess! I’m glad that I wasn’t scheduled to work on Tuesday, but the troopers at BeadFX did make it …
