Stop Trafficby: Dwyn Tomlinson
As I suggested - this huge Rivoli Button suggested a real traffic stopper. If this doesn't make people drop their jaws and stop conversations - check their pulse - they might be dead. Especially when you tell them you made it yourself!
Start with about a meter of Soft Touch Softflex - this lightweight beading thread is very strong and will resist being cut by the potentially sharp edges of the perforated screen finding.
The exact placement of the holes on the finding vary from piece to piece, so you will have to figure out which holes to use on your own.
Thread the Soft Touch on a needle, and start by looping through a couple of holes and tieing a knot at the back. (Leave the end tail long - you can use it to tie back onto at the end - then you can trim.)
Then, stitching around the outside hole, stitch on a alternating row of 8 mm Aqua and 6 mm Light Amethyst top-drill bicones. Try and keep the tension tight on the Soft Touch, but you may find that they are a little floppy at first. You should be able to juggle them enough to make it come out so the pattern repeats nicely all the way around.
Next, stitch the Rivoli Button into place. Carrying on with the same thread, stitch through a hole in the finding - go through the button hole, then through a hole on the opposite side of the finding, and then through the next hole, and back through the button to be extra secure. Keep your tension tight.
Now, you have just enough room for another row of crystals. Alternate 8 mm and 6 mm Tanzanite top-drill bicones. Make sure that they are on top of the button as you go. Space is getting tighter, so you might not be able to finish the pattern with an exact alternate - I couldn't. Don't worry - no one will notice. Secure the thread by knotting back to the original "tail." (or stitching through a pair of holes a couple of times and knotting, if you ignored my advice!)
The optional dangle is attached with a jumpring. To make the dangle, start with a 12 inch piece of light wire, and thread a briolette to the middle, and then fold the wires together, and twist a few time. Then, thread the next briolette an inch or so away, and fold the wire double, and twist. See the Let it Snow project for another example of this. The reason it is optional is that the design works equally well without it.
Add the back to the finding, and use pliers to gently fold down the prongs that hold in it in place.
Took me about an hour to put this together!
