Artemis

by: Jennifer Tough

This necklace is certainly fit for a goddess - and who better than a moon goddess such as Artemis? The main inspiration for this piece was of course the lovely textured lentil which looks quite a bit like a cratered moon - and the pearls, just luscious!

This will be a time consuming one to make, as each pearl is handwired. It is so worth the effort though, this necklace is stunning, and much richer than I can capture in a photo.   You'll notice that I have used a combination of both sterling, and base metal. I do usually try to work only in sterling, however in this case. The cost would have gone through the roof. I kept the sterling to the 'important' bits - the focal, the clasp, and the bead caps. The wire is silver plate artistic wire, and the head pins are rhodium plate (love those headpins!) These give you a non tarnish, antique silver finish. I suppose they may tarnish eventually - but we've been carrying them for about 7/8 years - and they're still going strong on jewelry we've designed with them.

Note: The pearl holes were a bit small for the 22 gauge wire. I decided to ream the holes to make them larger, rather than use a smaller gauge wire.  I didn't feel the 24 gauge would be strong enough for this particular necklace.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to mix sterling and base metals in many cases!
