Boris the Spider Earrings

by: Lee Metsalo

Look, he's crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he's up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly - Creepy, crawly ....

He's come to a sticky end
Don't think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl 'round
He's embedded in the ground

If Spiders don't make you run screaming for a book - to flatten them with - then you'll love these scary spidey earrings. Fun to make for the kids to show them how cool you are! You can even make them for the boys and hang them in unexpected places! Maybe a couple in the shower ... ?

While constructing your spiders, be sure to keep the wire smooth and free of kinks.  This will make it easier for you to work, and also greatly reduce the possibility of the wire breaking.  Always pull the wire gently and arrange the beads in their proper place.  During construction, it will look a big wonky, but the final step is to arrange it into a spider shape.

Pattern and bead counts:
 Instructions
  1. Start from the spider’s head.  Take one metre of wire and string on the six beads in the first row.  Push the beads to the centre of the wire.
  2. String the beads for the second row onto one side, put other end of wire through these beads in the opposite direction.  Pull both wires until the second row of beads is snug against the first, keeping the beads centred on the piece of wire.
  3. When adding legs, complete row 2 (for example) with the wire on one side thread one bugle, one seedbead, one bugle and one seedbead onto the wire, push the beads close to the spider’s body.  Skip the end seedbead and go back through the bugle, seedbead and bugle, keeping the beads snug to the spider body, and pulling the wire through.  Repeat with leg on other side, then continue with the next row for the spider body.
  4. Continue with pattern and counts above.  Don’t forget to attach loop a jumpring into the end of the wire on leg number eight to enable you to attach your shepherd’s hook.
  5. When the spider is complete, feed the ends of the wire back through at least one row of the spider body, and trim ends off.
  6. Gently manoeuvre your spider into a spider shape, attach earwires, and voila!
