Rainbow Bracelet

by Dwyn Tomlinson©2004

When I first saw the full range of the Swarovski™ colours — I was struck by how much more range of colour there was than in the Czech glass beads. While the Czech glass has an undeniably wide range of colours, I always felt that they were missing some of the subtler steps between colours that would allow me to design with shades and transitions from one colour to another.

So when I was introduced to the Swarovskis — I immediately started thinking of ways to use those more subtle colours to best effect.

This bracelet is a glorious tribute to the rainbow — an unabashedly self-indulgent riot of colour than spins around the spectrum. You may not agree with the way I've ordered the colours, in which case, feel free to adjust to suit your own tastes. It is a traffic-stopper — if you think it may be too much for you, then try the Rainbow II Bracelet. ;-)

This makes a fairly large bracelet that has no catch. It rolls on and off like a bangle bracelet. As such, the sizing needs to be quite precise. It needs to be large enough to just slide on without stressing the cable so much that it breaks, but not so large that it falls off when you reach down and shake your wrist.

We have found that you can't NOT take this bracelet on and off a lot, because everyone wants to try it on! So we suggest in this case stringing it on heavier cable and adding a clasp.

You may need to remove a bead and spacer to make this fit you correctly. It is, of course, up to you to decide which to remove. I suggest either the Montana or the Morion.

Assembly couldn't be easier — you can make this in half an hour with no experience whatsoever.

Supplies needed

  • approx 24 Swarovski 8 mm cubes
  • 24 Sterling Silver daisy spacers
  • SoftFlex beading cable
  • crimps and crimp covers
  • sterling clasp

Tools needed

  • Wire cutters
  • Crimp pliers

Making the bracelet

Thread the 8 mm cubes alternating with the sterling daisy spacers. Check the size of the bracelet. Adjust as necessary.

Thread the beads in the following order for the optimum "rainbow" effect:

  • Sapphire
  • Montana
  • Tanzanite
  • Violet
  • Light Amethyst
  • Light Rose
  • Rose
  • Amethyst
  • Burgundy
  • Siam
  • Fuchsia
  • Padparadscha
  • Topaz
  • Light Colorado Topaz
  • Jonquil
  • Lime
  • Olivine
  • Chrysolite
  • Erinite (trust me this colour is nicer in person than the picture shows)
  • Emerald
  • Morion
  • Indicolite
  • Aqua
  • Light Sapphire

Test for the threaded bracelet for size, and adjust as necessary. Then tie a Surgeons' Knot to secure the ends. A Surgeons' Knot is an overhand knot with an extra pass through the loop.

The beauty of using the Softtouch is that you can knot it, as it is lighter and more supple than it's other Sofflex cousins. It is, by the same token, not quite as indestructible. If you scrape it, you can make it curl, or weaken it. And, it is possible to break it, if you pull it too hard.

After knotting, pass the ends back through two or three beads (there is plenty of room), and secure with an additional knot around the main cable. Repeat, working around the bracelet, with each long end, until you meet again at the opposite side with the two ends. Knot the two ends together. Tuck the ends through a few more beads, and then cut off the end.

Alternately, you can thread on a doubled line.

Enjoy!
