June continues with great classes!

June – the month of weddings, proms and parties! With those events come the need for gifts – and a gift of handmade jewellery is always appreciated. Build your skills and create your gifts with a class with one of our many instructors. Note: As our air-conditioning works very well, our classroom gets a little chilly; please bring a light sweater or wrap with you. We’re pleased as punch to welcome Diane Dennis and Jean Power to BeadFX to teach classes. Each are offering three classes that are sure to delight and challenge you. Here are the classes scheduled June …

InspirationFX: Cherries Margarita

InspirationFX Get your creative juices flowing Cherries Margaritaby: Lee Metsalo Summer is coming! (We hope!) Make yourself a necklace with beads that look like those cold, fruit flavoured drinks that you sip on the patio in hot weather.  That thought, along with the light, airy design, will keep you cool.   To assemble necklace: Conveniently, Artistic Wire comes on a spool, meaning that your wire comes off the spool in an arc.  Be gentle working with the wire and don’t kink it!  Cut however many pieces you want links in your necklace, all equal lengths.  String one bead on each. …

InspirationFX: Something from the East

InspirationFX Get your creative juices flowing Something from the Eastby: Lee Metsalo This is a basic stringing project blending beads from two different points east.  Bali silver beads are like the LBD (Little Black Dress) – they make everything look good!  If, like me, you can’t wear yellow, try this necklace with turquoise, ice obsidian, turtirella agate, moss agate, carnelian, smoky topaz or red creek jasper.  All would work well! The tiny 2 mm rounds between the beads give a nice spacing and make the necklace bend and drape gracefully – much like knots in a pearl necklace, but without …

New this week at BeadFX – Nylon Soutache

Short, Sweet, and Long on Value We’re keeping this week’s update short and sweet – because half the staff has gone gallivanting off to Milwaukee for the Bead and Button show. The noive of them! I’m hoping to make it myself one year – but apparently – this was not my year! So this week – we’re just rolling out some new Soutache. This is from a different supplier, and is made from Nylon. (The original Soutache is rayon). This incidentally means that you can fuse the cut ends with a Thread Zapper or lighter, as opposed to a dot …

Getting to know…Anne Marie Desaulniers

Mixed-media has been a relatively new addition to the range of techniques and classes that BeadFX has offered. Anne Marie Desaulniers has been leading the charge by offering several classes in Intuitive Bead Embroidery, Paper Beads, and Altered Dominoes. Her classes have been very well received and more are on the way! Anne Marie has always been a ‘creator’. “I’ve been involved in artsy pursuits all my life,” says Anne Marie. “It started with playing with my grandmother’s scraps, moved to art lessons and sewing clothes, then being pressed into service for fancy wrapping paper jobs and flower arranging. I’ve …

InspirationFX: Stones and Sterling

InspirationFX Get your creative juices flowing Stones and Sterlingby: Rae Huggins I tried to behave, but they were calling my name, If I had ignored them, then that would be a shame. So off I went, to answer their call, ‘Cause if I didn’t, this inspiration, would not have been at all. Not blaming anyone this time.  😉 Okay, blame “restocking” and that is no crime … These earring were fast and easy to put together. Start with a headpin, add the sterling “stone,” then the stone round, and then the spacer, and add the earwire before making the wrapped …

The Business Chat – 5 ways to kill your own success

“The economy is terrible! All those third world products! All the copying! No one appreciate handmade work! There are too many jewelers/soap makers/print makers/knitters for anyone to make money!” We all dream of having a wildly successful little business don’t we? (That is why you’re reading this I assume.) Many of us will do just that, set up shop and work out way to our own version of success. And many will not.  For some the dream just doesn’t seem to happen no matter what they do. The ones who don’t succeed are so busy blaming everything around them that …
