The Business Chat – 9 sales tips for your craft show

Being a tiny company of one means I wear many hats during a workweek. This weekend I’m off to yet another craft show of the summer season and it’s time for me to put on my Salesperson hat. Being a salesperson doesn’t come naturally for me, I would much rather just chat and hang out with people than give them a hard sell. As a customer I hate when a clerk is “salespersony”, pushy and with one of those scary all-teeth fake smiles. As an artist (artisan, crafter, maker, whatever you are comfortable calling yourself) it is important that we …

The Dog Days of Summer

Ah, the dog days of summer. It’s been long enough since the bleak winds of February that the heat and humidity, the bugs and the allergies – they are all starting to wear a bit thin. Plus this summer has been just weird – we haven’t gone more than 4 days without rain since June, and if you don’t like the weather, wait an hour, it will be different then. What to do, what to do? I know, why don’t we just have a big ol’ sale on everything and cheer everyone up? So how about it? 20% off everything* …

InspirationFX: Delhi Jelly

Another cute little project – just something quick and easy to make. Delhi Jelly by: Dwyn Tomlinson Here’s another super simple project, put together with our gemstone links and jumprings and a clasp. Nothing to it – quick to assemble. Deep pink and orange always make me think of Indian colour sensibilities – Orange is Navy Blue and cultural tastes in colour – and that leads me to wonder what drives them. I can wander down that road for a long time! I chose not to alternate colours for every step, just for variety. I got to use some of …

InspirationFX: All Buttered Up

InspirationFX Get your creative juices flowing All Buttered Upby: Rochelle Kilmer I fell in love with the free-form ovals – especially in the yellow jade. I wanted to add a little bling, so that is where the Crystal Dorado and Antique Brass pearls fell into play. I took my softflex and crimped an end with a wire guardian and one end of the clasp on. I then made all my dangles. I mixed crystals and pearls on headpins – some longer, some shorter. I made the loops with the 1-step Looper. I strung 1 4 mm pearl, a jade oval, …

InspirationFX: Playing in Van Goghs Garden

InspirationFX Get your creative juices flowing Playing in Van Goghs Garden by: Lee Metsalo When I first saw the Faux-Abalone series, I immediately thought of Van Gogh’s Irises.  When I read our description of the “scratchability” of these beads, the next question that came up was,  “How will this piece would react to being glued?”  So I decided to play, and used the E6000 to test.  Success! The description of the bezel setting says that it has a single hole for hanging, but who is to say which way?  When in the garden, one plays!  And so, I turned the …

The Business Chat – It’s monthly staff meeting time!

Yesterday my calendar beeped at me and reminded me, hey, another month is gone, tomorrow is a new month! This is a reminder not just to make sure there’s money in my chequing account to cover bills but for another big event. On the first of the every month I sit down and have a staff meeting. Me, a latte, a cookie and my notebook.  Every business should do this, and yes, that means you. Knowing what you want to accomplish in the next month means that you are moving towards a goal. If you don’t have a goal line …
