Chainmaille Boot Camp: Part II

November 16 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cdn $70.00 +Kit fee: $20, payable to the instructor the day of the class, plus a kit of your choice.

Join Marilyn Gardiner for a full-day class to get grounded in chainmail basics. In addition to basic chainmail information you will learn how to make key chainmail weaves that represent 3 of the main families of weaves: Japanese, European, and Persian.

Part 1

We will answer questions about tools; wire and jump rings; and lighting and magnification. You will receive handouts (if you don’t already have them) about these topics for further reference. Quality workmanship will be demonstrated and encouraged.

Tools:

  • Buying pliers: how to choose, what to consider when you are choosing pliers to buy
  • An opportunity to try out lots of different kinds in class

Wire & jump rings:

  • What you need to know before you buy wire & jump rings
  • Learn about different metal options, their qualities, their cost, and how to clean them
  • How to open and close jump rings

Lighting & Magnification:

  • Try out different types of magnification and learn about lighting options

Part 2

You will start by practicing how to open and close rings while making a Mobius Earring, and then proceed to learn and make the sample weaves. You will end up with sample chains that represent some of the main families of chainmaille weaves:

  • European:  Roundmaille, a variation of European 4 in 1
  • Japanese/European: Celtic Visions
  • Persian: Full Persian 6 in 1 (Foxtail)

As we do this, we will examine jewellery samples and photos to see the wide variety of ways these weaves can be used to make bracelets, pendants, necklaces and earrings. We’ll also see examples how these basics lead to variations such as Turkish Roundmaille, Celtic Stars, and Sweet Pea weaves.

Part 3

To finish the day, you will choose from a selection of project kits and start making your choice of a bracelet, earrings or necklace to work on.
