Introduction to Silver Filigree

October 20, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cdn $135.00

Course outline: In this class with Christine Woollacott, students will learn the decorative metal technique of filigree. Students will learn how to form traditional scalloped fine silver filigree wire from regular round wire. Students will create a thicker fused Argentium silver frame, and will learn how to bend wire accurately into even, repeating shapes. Traditional powder filigree solder will be used to stabilize the design. Additional design elements such as beads, bezel-set stones, and silver granules will be discussed. While the soldering and fusing involved in this project is not technically difficult, students should be prepared to spend the majority of their time shaping and fussing over wires.

Students will receive 6″ of Argentium 18ga square wire to create their filigree frame as part of the class fee.

Skill level: Intermediate/advanced

Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable using a torch, and have significant patience.

Technique: Create beautiful, feminine jewellery using the traditional decorative technique of filigree.

Bring to class:

  • 4 feet of Dead Soft 20ga fine silver wire (SKU imp13009)
  • Clean charcoal block or fire brick. While there are fire bricks and charcoal available for use in the studio, students will likely find it easier to use a pristine block for this project due to the level of precision necessary.
  • Small container to store filigree wire fragments, granules etc.
  • Fine-tip tweezers
  • Flush wire cutters
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Any additional favorite pliers (pliers will also be available in the metal studio for use during the class)
  • Magnification, if required
