Metalsmith Essentials: Multi-level textured cuff with cabochons

$95 +Kit fee: Kits range from $35 to $95, depending on metals chosen. Kit fees are payable to the instructor the day of the class and must be chosen at the time of registration.

Course outline: Create a multi-level textured cuff with Iris Rogers Melamed using a rolling mill to add texture, and hand forming techniques to create dimension. Students will solder (and/or rivet) bezel cups on a curve, set cabochons, explore different patination options (chemical and heat) and cold connect multiple layers of textured and formed metal.  A kit is required; please indicate your kit choice at the time of registration.

Kits and kit fees: There will be several kits available: all base metal, base metal and sterling silver or all sterling silver. All kits include metal to fabricate three six-inch cuffs, wire to create rivets, 3 bezel cups and three cabochons. Student may select the base metals and cabochons of their choice. Kit fee also includes use of the instructor’s rolling mill plates and metal forming tools.

  • Base metal kit (copper, brass and german silver): $35
  • Base metal (2) and a 20mm sterling silver bracelet for the middle layer: $55
  • Base metal (1) and 2 sterling silver (28mm for base, 12 mm for top): $75
  • Sterling silver: $95

Technique: Forming and texturing metal, soldering, riveting and setting cabochons

  • Patience and enthusiasm!
  • Please bring magnifiers if required for close up work.
  • PLEASE WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES FOR SAFETY
  • As this is a full-day class, please bring a lunch. Coffee and cold drinks will be available.

How to Register:

  • You may register for all classes and open sessions either on-line, in-person at the store, or by calling the store at (416) 751-1911
  • Full payment must be made at the time of registration
  • Materials for Virtual classes are the responsibility of the student, unless otherwise indicated in the class description.
  • For some metalwork, mixed media and lampwork classes, a waiver must be signed acknowledging you have experience or training in their use, and we will ensure you have training to work safely!
  • Some classes have age requirements. Students MUST be mature and responsible to work safely to be allowed to take some of our lampworking, soldering, fusing, and some metalsmithing classes.

Class Cancellation Policy:

  • Virtual classes: Cancellations and refunds will not be permitted once instructions, materials and electronic links to the classes have been emailed to students. Only registered students will be permitted to take virtual classes.
  • In-Studio classes: If you need to cancel an in-studio class, please let us know 5 days prior to the class. Cancellations made later than that will forfeit the class deposit or fee. If you come to the class unwell (sore throat, fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc.) you will be asked to leave and a refund will NOT be provided.
  • We may re-schedule or cancel classes if we do not receive the minimum number of bookings, or in case of bad weather or instructor illness. In this case, you will be notified and the fees will be refunded or issued as store credit.
