Mokume Gane – Woodgrain Patterns in Mixed Metals

December 15, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Cdn $135.00

Course outline: Mokume Gane is a Japanese term used to describe mixed-metal sheet that imitates the look of wood grain. In this class you will learn how to use pre-made copper and brass metal billets (fused stacks of layered metals) to create a customized sheet of woodgrain patterned metal. The patterned metal will then be used to create a simple domed pendant, or seamless ring. The class fee includes a 1″x 1″ piece of 14ga copper/brass modkume billet to pattern.

The instructor will bring in some Baldwin’s patina solution and demonstrate its use. This patina darkens some metals but leaves other metals untouched. This is particularly useful when you want a mixed metal design like mokume gane to ‘pop’.

Skill level: Beginner

Prerequisite: None

Technique: Using a pre-made metal billet (a pre-layered piece of metal) of copper and brass, students will use files and burs to create a unique wood-grain pattern in mixed metals. Students will also use the rolling mill and other metalwork tools to create their project.

Bring to class: Magnification if required. As this is a full-day class, please bring a lunch; coffee, tea, and cold drinks will be available.

Of special note: the class patterns and instructions from our classes are for your personal use only. Please respect the intellectual property of our artists/instructors by not sharing, selling, or teaching the patterns you receive from the classes you take.
