Turtle Tab Setting a Cabochon or Flat Back Crystal or Flat Bead

February 23 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$45.00 +Kit fee: $15, payable to the instructor the day of the class.

Course outline: Here is an opportunity to create a pendant for your favourite cabochon or flat stone bead! With guidance from Liz Kennedy, you’ll set your cabochon in copper sheet or stainless sheet metal using tabs which have been cut using shears. Using various stamps, hammers and home-made stamps, you’ll texture the metal, adding strength to your pendant. Finally, a self-bail will be made and you can choose to add a patina to emphasize the textural details. You’ll create your own design and can make your piece as large or as small as you wish. This is a great project for those who want tabs but do not like using a jewellers saw.

Skill level: Beginner

Prerequisite: N/A

Technique: Designing a pendant to suit their flat back cabochon (or flat bead). Cutting sheet metal using shears. Use of shears to cut tabs from the edge to centre of pendant and folding them up to hold a cabochon in place. This leaves negative space in the design. It looks a bit like a turtle hence the name. A tab will be cut into the design which will be used to make a bail. Texturing the metal to add strength. Filing, sanding and finishing the metal with a patina. Annealing with a torch may be required.

Bring to class:

  • Students must purchase or bring their own cabochon or flat back bead. A chain is not provided so they should bring their own or purchase one.
  • Paper and pencil for planning their design.
  • If they have them: Metal shears, chain nose, flat nose and round nose pliers, flush cutter, leather or rubber mallet, ruler, thin Sharpie marker, bezel pusher.
  • Hammers, stamps of their own that they may want to use to texture the metal. Some of these will be available for use by students if they do not have them.
