November 2019 Bead Mat Update

My November 2019 Bead Mat Update is a study in contrasts. As a mixed-up media artist, I feel that it’s my duty to show you a variety of projects, but that’s not all! I want to educate you, by showing both the good, and the bad! Okay, it’s not all bad, but I must admit that I’m not feeling all that creative these days. Mainly due to the fact that I’m in organizing mode, but also because my left and right brain, seem to be having a stand-off!  But I’m normally very creative, yet when I organize, my nit-picking, detail-oriented, …

What makes an artist an artist?

Is “what makes an artist an artist” a fair question? How is an artist defined, and who exactly is an artist? An artist is someone who makes art! But then, how do you define art? Do you need a particular set of skills, or formal training to make art, or is it just something you can just call yourself? What if someone else calls you an one? Does that make it so? Is a designer an artist? At times, but who knows where to draw the line? I do know that there are artists, in many different disciplines. Jewelery is …

September 2019 Bead Mat Update: Let the Fall begin!

What would the September 2019 Bead Mat Update be, without a mention of the Autumn Equinox! It was on the 23rd, but it’s the official sign that Summer is now officially over! Crazy I know, but I actually like fall! Cooler temperatures bring fabulous colours, then you can put away all those tired t-shirts, and capris! Yeah, like we ever want to do that!!! But the magnificent colours of the leaves, makes it all worthwhile, doesn’t it? Fall also brings a renewed interest in learning new things! Where better to do this, than from our marvelous instructors at BeadFX? I’ve …

Time Flies: But what are you going to do about it?

Time flies so fast, that it’s sometimes hard to keep up! Doesn’t it feel like the older you get, the faster it flies? As a student, do you remember how long the school year was, then how anxious you were to get to the summer vacation part? I would like to slow it down a little, so that I can get even half of what’s rolling around in my brain, done! But isn’t that always the case? Work, and the hard, or uncomfortable activities, do take precedence, while the fun, creative stuff seems to be shoved into little bites of …

Fun with Freeform!

The fact that I have fun with freeform, is probably no surprise to most of you. I bead it, I stitch it, then sometimes even combine the two! It’s an intuitive way of working, that allows you to create, without following a traditional pattern. It is a fairly free way of working, but still requires a certain amount of order. Without that, there would be chaos! This one, entitled “Worms”, is a little chaotic, but it was an experiment, that just kept on giving. I still love it!! When I create, I let my mind flow free, but I’m always …

May 2019 Bead Mat Update: Freeform, stitch, and stories!

My May 2019 bead mat update is late in the month, but then so is spring in Toronto! But here it is, and believe it or not, we’ve even had a few, very nice days. Not enough yet, but you learn to take what you can get! Nothing is better, than spending time with enthusiastic students! I love every minute of it, and it’s even better if you have something to show at the end of the day. My Freeform Peyote Beaded Bead class, last Sunday, was no exception! Of course, none of the beads were finished in the class …

Designing with Components: A different approach!

Is designing with components a new way of looking at things? It’s not entirely new for me, because I’ve been making components for years. However, I don’t exactly use all of the components that I’ve made. My component list is quite varied. I teach freeform peyote beads, resin, cement filled bezels, needle felted pendants, and intuitive bead embroidery. In the past, I’ve also taught paper beads, altered dominos, paper pendants, altered washers, birdhouse pendants, fibre and wire beads, freeform peyote, driftwood pendants, and a motley selection of mixed media bits and pieces. But then there’s also the components that I …

March 2019 Bead Mat Update: This and that!

For my March 2019 Bead Mat Update, I’d like to show you what I’ve been playing with lately. Believe it or not, all of the jewelery pieces were created last weekend, but that’s not all! I’ve been futzing about with a big deadline, and also managed to meet my goal, with one whole day to spare. Colour me relieved!! I celebrated meeting the deadline with a nap, then went on to create some stuff. I do have another deadline on the horizon, but I’ll take care of that before the end of the week. My Artist’s Concrete was gathering dust, …

Bead Soup Mixes: Exploring the mystery!

Who doesn’t love bead soup mixes? Certainly not me!! I work with them so much, that I don’t really think about the colour theory part of it. But perhaps I should explore this subject a little further! Rosemary was de-stashing, and offered me a cool little book called “Beaded Colourways – Creating Freeform Beadweaving Projects and Palettes” by Beverly Ash Gilbert. I had never heard of the book, despite the fact that I fell in love with Beverly’s richly coloured bead soup mixes, at the start of my beading journey. I followed her blog for years (but probably an older version …

January 2019 Bead Mat Update: Stitch and Bead!

My January 2019 Bead Mat Update came much too fast! Snow must have clouded my brain, because I almost missed writing it!! During the month of January, I’ve had a nasty cold, received some interesting news, and have started on my 2019 Stitch Meditation journey! I’ve also re-connected with the Bead Journal Project, and have been helping  to breathe new life into the project! I’m a Moderator, on the Stitch Meditation Group, and an Administrator on the Bead Journal Project (BJP) Facebook groups. Stitch Meditations have really taken off, so an awful lot of time has been spent approving new members. …
