November 2019 Bead Mat Update

My November 2019 Bead Mat Update is a study in contrasts. As a mixed-up media artist, I feel that it’s my duty to show you a variety of projects, but that’s not all! I want to educate you, by showing both the good, and the bad! Okay, it’s not all bad, but I must admit that I’m not feeling all that creative these days. Mainly due to the fact that I’m in organizing mode, but also because my left and right brain, seem to be having a stand-off!  But I’m normally very creative, yet when I organize, my nit-picking, detail-oriented, …

OOAK – Pyritized Ammonite Negative

Wow. Just wow. This is not a fossil – rather it is an ancient imprint of the place where an ammonite shell once rested. A fossil footprint, so to speak. The imprints became impregnated with pyrite (hence the term pyritized), giving us a gleaming metallic impression of where a shell once sat in the mud. Wouldn’t you like to have one of these one-of-a-kind items? Now THAT is something different. Also, stunningly different. This amazing Specular Hematite cabochon. You might have to see this in person to see the wow factor. This one takes my breath away, not in a …

Cat’s Eye, Chakra, OOAK Cabs, Bit of a Hurry

Sorry folks – working on something BIG and suffering from a bit of a time crunch, so brace yourself, the update is coming atcha at the speed o’ light! Hang in there. Cats Eye & Eagle Eye This lovely shimmery natural Cat’s Eye is a far-cry from the man-made fiber-optic beads that are also called Cat’s Eye. Nothing wrong with those, they are pretty and fun, but this is the original, the inspiration, so to speak. And this will look amazing in your own handmade jewelry, whether you are making something office chic or evening elegant. Or for just making …

February 2019 Bead Mat Update: Finishing is not all it’s cracked up to be!

Wow, my February 2019 Bead Mat Update came along way too fast! Is that because it’s a short month, or because of all of the crappy weather that we’ve been having? I wish that I could say that it’s been a productive month, but no, I don’t think that it was. I stayed inside, so you think that I would have accomplished an awful lot, but no, that’s not the case. Sigh! I had a private class scheduled on one of the days that BeadFX closed early, so I gave my student a choice a day earlier, and she decided …

A Concerted Effort …

Picture yourself, on a hill by a river with tangerine trees and buff coloured skies … Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly A girl in a long cloak walks by Picture Jasper doesn’t need no diamonds Mother nature paints a picture of the highlands Trees and forests, hills and rocks and islands Ahhhhh … Little darlin’, it’s been a long cold lonely winter Little darlin’, it’s been 200 million years Here comes the spring, here comes the sun, And I say, it’s fossil coral and it’s all right I see the stone – what a beautiful sight Pink and …

As Promised, Lapis Cabs

I promised you Lapis Lazuli cabochons – and here they are. One of a Kind – please don’t wait – they will go fast. I don’t think I need to say anything else – they speak for themselves – “I’m bluuuuue – buy me.” At least – that’s what they say to me. 😉   What’s next? Here’s a clue … Tiger Iron! No actual tigers were ironed in the making of these beads – Tiger Iron is a combination of Tigereye, Hematite and Red Jasper. Tigereye and Hematite are both minerals that are iron-rich – but we don’t recommend …

OOAK – One of a Kind

One of a kind items. We know that it doesn’t make a lot of sense from a business perspective to put “One of a Kind” items on the website. We know that people shop on other sites – like etsy – for one of a kind items. But we also know that you trust us, and some of you like to get all your stuff in one place. And gosh darn it – we live in a big country, and it’s not possible for all of you to get to the store. 😉 Plus, our buyer is a genius. So, …

Finishing dilemma! Now what do I do to fix this?

Do you question your own creative ideas? Do your components overwhelm you with a finishing dilemma? Its natural! All your components really need is time, and a little haphazard fondling! Take my flame enamelled beads, for example (finished in Ann Shewan’s-Painting with Fire workshop last Sunday). I made a whole wack of them, but now what do I do? Is it too early to consider them a finishing dilemma? Perhaps, but I do have a few preliminary ideas. The majority of the beads are in my favourite blue/green (with a little raspberry thrown in for good measure) colour scheme. I …

Let me call you a cab – ochon.

Ok – you’re a cab. We’ve got cabs – lots of cabs. An uber number of cabs, as a matter of fact. If you can’t face puns like that, you need one of these cabs – it will face you. Personally – I think there is something fishy about the whole thing, but then you’ll accuse me of being catty. This whole conversation is for the birds. By Jupiter – we’ve got a lot of cabs – these cabs look like a planet. There is just one of each though – so if snooze, you lose. Kind of like how …
