Graphite and Enamel Charms

Course outline: Students will learn how to incorporate their own graphite drawings into vitreous enamel under the guidance of instructor Christine Woollacott. In the class, students will make simple charms or components that have been decorated with their own drawings and then delicately coloured with transparent glass enamels. Students will learn wet-packing enamel techniques with a focus on effective colour shading. Preparation of the enamel surface for graphite drawings will be covered, as well as kiln firing methods. Plique-a-jour with Fine Silver Metal Clay (2 days)

Course outline: Plique-a-jour is a style of enamelling that uses a delicate metal framework to support free areas of transparent glass. Because plique-a-jour has no metal backing, it is visually similar to a stained glass window. While this technique is beautiful, it is arguably the most challenging form of enamelling. In this class, students will create fine silver frames for plique-a-jour using metal clay. Multiple approaches to enamel application will be covered. Cloissone Enamel on Sheet Metal

Course outline: Cloisonne is a style of enamelling that uses fine wires to create a design of glass and metal. The wires are used to form partitions – cloisons – that aid in colour shading and help to create the overall design. In this class, students will create original jewellery designs or components using copper or fine silver sheet metal, fine silver wire and colourful vitreous glass enamel.
