Lampwork Art Beads
One of a kind, artist-made lampwork beads, handmade by local artists. These are artists we have a strong connection to, they work in our studio, teach, or were taught, right here. We think their talent is extraordinary, and we'd like to share them with you.
Each item is one of a kind, due to the nature of being hand made.
What is Lampwork? Lampwork is a very old technique of working glass by working directly in a 2000 degree flame, melting the glass and building up layers. The artist chooses the colours beforehand, and then has to work blind, because the colours are different when they are glowing hot. The beads are then placed into a kiln and cooled very slowly overnight (annealing) to ensure their durability. The ceramic coating that lines the bead hole (which allows removal from the stainless steel mandrel that makes the bead hole) is then drilled out, and the bead may be further processed by etching in acid or sandblasting.
