See you…In December!

Already…I know! We’re slowly winding down the classes – but certainly not the store, as this is of course one of our most busiest times with everyone picking up supplies to make the gifts they should have started a month or two ago. (Guilty as charged!) We do have a few awesome classes lined up to tide you through to the new year. Thursday we’re busy with both an open beading night with Stephanie, and of course our weekly torchworking happy hour. We’d love to see you there! On Friday, come and learn how to make these fabulous netted snowflakes …

Lampwork Studio Clean Up

We’re planning on doing some studio clean up and redesign in the near future. (Yet again!) For those of you who don’t use the lampworking part of our store, the folks who do use it frequently like to store their supplies with us, to save lugging it back and forth. In light of the work that we plan to do – we request that those of you who have stuff stashed here, please come and pick it up by the end of December. That includes beads made too. Some of you have actually left phone numbers on your stash – …

The Joy of Metal Clay: Inspirations from Helen Breil

I have mentioned Helen Breil before in my blog posts. She is an Ontario based polymer clay artist. She has designed awesome texture sheets that many of my students (and myself of course) love. These textures can be bought through Shades of Clay. She has developed many tutorials that she offers for sale on her blog. Although these tutorials are made for polymer clay they can sometimes be adapted for metal clay. The things to keep in mind when adapting polymer clay techniques are: Generally metal clay dries fast Generally metal clay needs to to shaped quickly and will crack …

A new version of Inspiration Friday

Shhh – just forget that today is Saturday. Thanks to Lyndsey, who had an awesome idea for a new version of our Inspiration Friday posts.  We think that one week just might be a wee bit too short of a time frame. Also, we want you to choose the inspiration from one of the many colour inspiration sites out there. On Thursday, I posted about design seeds. There are of course many others out there. We think this will be easier for you to challenge yourself, as you’re given a palette to work with, rather than just a picture. Here’s …

The Business Chat – Stand your ground

Well hello! Hi, how are you? Good morning! Excuse me, it’s seriously craft show season and I am a bit on autopilot right now. Day 2 into an 11 day show and I did a 6 day show last week. I’ve got my smile pasted onto my face and I am in serious sales mode. This show is the highlight of my year. After so much time working alone in a room now I get to see real people playing with my jewelry. I do love that. It’s also a real high seeing 800 top makers in one room, catching …

Need Inspiration? Design Seeds to the Rescue

Design Seeds is my absolute favourite source of colour inspiration. They even have a facebook page where they post the newest colour sets, as I tend to forget to check the site.  Print out one of the inspiring colour sets, take out your bead stash – I don’t think you’ll be uninspired for long! Here are a few of my favourites today. {dried tones} {berry spectrum} {crafted hues} {intricate tones}

New This Week!

Seedy, Twisted, Wired – and Wearing Leather! Geez – sounds like a bad date! Actually – Seedy, Twisted and Wired is all good stuff, and not the boyfriend that your father waited up for with a shotgun! New wire this week – including Twisted wire! – new from Parawire – some more metallic colours – including this very handsome “Rose Gold” colour – a pinky gold colour – and colour it is – it is still a copper-core wire – easy to bend and manipulate, and way easier on the wallet than actual gold wire would be! Also new is …

Bling!

I’ve been working with the kids every day after school on Christmas ornaments. Years ago, before children – I collected lovely vintage german glass ornaments. 8 years later….with children, I now no longer have ANY ornaments. No more glass ornaments until I can trust that my magpie children will NOT paw at them like excited kittens. I’ve been trying to come up with ideas that will give my tree the wonderous sparkle that glass provides, without the breakabilty. The plastic ball ornaments just aren’t doing it for me. Swarovski hotfix, and flatbacks to the rescue. I’ve pulled out my bejeweler, …

And we come to the end of November…

Scary….truly. It cannot be almost December – I’m just not ready.  🙂  Here though is a perfect opportunity to take a class, and make stuff for gifts. Save time, and do something for yourself! Resin with Rosemary – Wednesday November 23rd from 6 to 9pm Students will work with ICE RESIN® to create their own personal pieces of jewellery using either clipart or photographs or other inlcusions (like gemstones, crystals, pieces of metal etc). In the class, students will learn and design a collage to set in a bezel, and cover with ICE RESIN® to create a glass-like dome. We …
