InspirationFX: Dragonfly Links

Dragonfly Links by: Anne Marie Desaulniers Dragonflies flit through the air, bringing light, wisdom, transformation, change and adaptability to your life. At least in a symbolic sense! My dragonflies are linked with chains, but still give a lasting impression of daydreams, light and movement! If you only made a wish, I’m sure that something magical would happen! This two-strand necklace is full of movement and grace! In my original plans (which often go astray), it was going to be three-strands, and tied off with a red, silk strand. My muse said “enough”, after I completed the second strand, and then …

Concrete and Candy!

We’re cementing our relationships! Getting them on a solid footing. In fact – we could say there is some thing really concrete about them! This is Artist’s Concrete – as used by mixed-media artist Robert Dancik – and is fun and easy to use. You put a tablespoon of the concrete powder in a disposable cup, add a 1/8 teaspoon of water – mix, and add a few drops more water to adjust the consistency. A stiffer mixture (like dough) is stronger, but a thinner mixture (like heavy cream) pours better – so you can adjust to your needs (packing …

First Look: Artist’s Concrete

I saw a video on Artist’s Concrete, and then another video – and then another and someone asked about it and it looked really cool and I could see a lot of potential, and here we are – we are now carrying it in the store! So I had a chance to sit down with it and do a little experimenting before it goes live on the website (tonight at midnight!). First thing I can tell you – is that the amount of water that they say to add is not enough. You will need to add a couple more …

Divine design!

What makes a successful design? It’s not necessarily the most popular colours and beads, but that certainly plays a part in the overall outcome. However, I like to think that designs that stand the test of time are probably the most successful. René Lalique, immediately comes to mind, when I think of art glass. He was “a French glass designer known for his creations of glass art, perfume bottles, vases, jewelery, chandeliers clocks and automobile hood ornaments.” He opened his own business in 1885, and “by 1890 was recognized as one of France’s foremost Art Nouveau jewellery designers”. His pieces …

Late-August Classes Bloom!

I’m not ready to end summer as yet! I love the relaxed feeling that July and August brings (although I would be happy to give up the humidity) and the long, light-filled evenings. Enamelling enthusiasts will love Christine Woollacott’s newest class – a fine silver and enamelled ring! We also have several encore classes with Pamela Kearns, Angela Peace, Anne Marie Desaulniers and Kelly Garland. And, of course, we have our open sessions and studios that you can work on your projects with help and guidance from experts. By the way, mark your calendar now for our free Back to …

Enamelling

I love the amazing alchemy of creating a glass surface on metal using powdered enamels and a torch. There’s something so satisfying about watching your design pass through the sugar coat then orange peel stages and finally become a glassy smooth surface.  I’ve been torch fire enamelling for many years and I continue to play with this technique that seems to have limitless permutations. You can use stencils, ink stamps, transfers, frit, cats whiskers, millifiori, graphite, sgraffito, enamel paints, crayons and countless other finishes and techniques to create a one of a kind artwork on metal.  One of my favourite …

InspirationFX: Swish, Sway, & Tassel Away

Swish, Sway, & Tassel Away by: Rochelle Kilmer This wonderful blue-green colour is my favourite. There is no surprise I was attracted to these tassels. Do you have a coffee date with the girls? Light and airy, an excellent pair of earrings to go with your favourite jeans! Date night? Your little black dress is just begging for a pop of colour. These earrings are so easy to do up, you might make the rainbow! 1) Open a jumpring and slide the loop of the tassel on. Close the jumpring. 2) Slide the decorative sterling bead over the jumpring. It …

What’s on my bead mat – August edition!

What happened to summer? It’s certainly been hot and steamy, but how long will it last? Has anyone felt like doing any serious work? I’ve been lazing about, focusing on finishing off a few things, working on class samples, and dreaming up a few “Inspirations” for the store. The last time I tried to coat two of my larger alcohol ink projects in Ice Resin (a ceramic tile, and a small plate), I was quite disappointed. I followed all of the rules, but didn’t get complete coverage on my first try (once dry, the surface was pitted, and uneven). As …
