August bead mat update: Tales from the recycling bin!

I like to think that recycle, reuse, and repurpose, are the main messages in my August bead mat update! Serious words, that must play an important part, in the world we live in!

When I dig through my quilting fabric boxes, I think of fabric twine (amongst other things). I always even off the selvedge edges, before I tear any fabric strips (call me obsessed!). Then I end up with a pile of colourful fabric strips, that are somewhat uneven! How could I let that happen? What the heck should I do with them? Are they useful, or not? Waste not, want not!!!

I know, fabric beads! I needed a new take on them, so decided to try my particular brand of mixed up media! Now I have a colourful pile, of wire wrapped, mixed media beads. I need to make more beads, and then I need to make a necklace! My beads include wire wrapping, fibre, thread, bead caps, and paper? Could this be a new workshop series in the making? I know how to make other types of beads, so a series it could be! Shhh, don’t tell anyone!!

Now on to my next venture! Rooting around in my old canvas fabric, I decided to use it as a base for fibre collage. The perfect frayed edges, were calling out to be used. Mixing canvas, with fabric, and lace scraps, is a given! All I’m missing is paint (perhaps in my next one). Hand embroidery has been added to the mix, but no beads yet! Perhaps one series with hand embroidery, and another with bead embroidery! What’s that you say? Another new workshop in the future? I guess! You guys keep me on my toes, therefore I need to dig deep, to come up with new ideas! Right back to my roots, of course!

My final August bead mat update, has absolutely nothing to do with the recycling bin. I’m now, more than a little obsessed with stretchy, semi-precious stone bracelets! Six now, with a couple more waiting in the wings (or should I say, in bags!). This stone obsession is getting serious (thanks BeadFX)! I started with 6 mm stones, moved on to 8’s, and now I’m eyeing 10’s. I even set aside a strand of brown beads, which is shocking for me! Will it never end? Should I just stack them at will, or will the total weight be too much for my arms? One is not enough, two is too even, but three or five could be just right! Only time will tell, but seriously, these bracelets are flirty, fun, and oh so easy to wear!!! Now what about this vintage, glass necklace, could it become yet another stretchy bracelet?

I love messing with scraps! You can see from my August bead mat update, that I also like messing with stones! Does anyone else, share my obsessions? It’s okay if you do, and okay if you don’t! Do you want to share?
