Trend Spotting – Top 3 Trends we see right now

Sometimes, the coincidences pile up so fast you think to yourself – there’s a trend here. And I’ll tell you what we are seeing in terms of what people are interested in right now in jewelry crafting!   Matte – Matte finish comes and goes, and right now – it’s in. Matte, particularly in stone – which adds an extra step to the process – as the stone is polished, and then matted. I’ve always been fond of matte in particular colours – i.e. Black – I like the contrast it provides – and rose quartz looks particularly nice in …

Bead soup is delicious!

Not only that, but bead soup contains zero calories! Doesn’t that sound impossibly fantastic? I must confess that I actually stole the bead soup idea from one of Dwyn’s recent Instagram posts, for beadfxbeads (it also posted our Facebook page). She was making a video for the store, but had a leetle beading accident, and ended up with a pile of bead soup! Okay, she didn’t call it an accident, but the story sounds better that way. LOL! Anyway, one lucky reader quickly guessed the right answer, and ended up with the pile, so all is good! Bead soup for …

Spread your Creative Wings!

You can cultivate creativity – you don’t need to be born with it. According to WikiHow, broadening your knowledge is one way of fostering creativity. For example, you have an idea for a bracelet that you want to create. If the bracelet is metal, do you need to know how to solder? If it is made of beads, what beads will work best and how can you assemble it? Like many people, you head to YouTube to check out the techniques. Yea, you found something! Unfortunately, the video isn’t in focus; the sound is muffled and you can’t ask questions. …

Forgotten Objects: To use or not to use!

Using forgotten objects in your beading and jewelery is an art! That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it! Of course, I wouldn’t dare to suggest that you just use forgotten objects, but it certainly is fun trying to combine them with new stones, chains and findings from BeadFX. I’ve been doing that for years! Resin, intuitive bead embroidery, then more recently with fabric collage, slow stitch, and Stitch Meditations. But what about talismans? I love forgotten objects, found objects, organic elements, pre-owned, pre-loved, and vintage. Fabric dyed with rust, is a real treat, yet I’m still tempted by boiled …

Copper Pipe Pendants

We initially published this post back in 2010 – it has been far and away our most commented on post ever. We share it with you again for those of you who haven’t seen it before! Initial post by Jennifer Tough A while back I picked up a book by Stephanie Lee called Semi-precious Salvage. I just love her designs, as I’m quite enamored with the vintage-y, rough, dug out of the dirt look. Mixed media jewellery is quite intriguing to me – and I plan to explore it more over the next little while. I’m really just scratching the …

Jingle Bells … Christmas in July!

It’s hotter than Hell out there … Hell, California that is. Also, Hell, Norway; Hell, Cayman Islands; and Hell, Michigan. Although Hell, Arizona is pretty close. And it also means, while you are hiding from the heat, that you can take advantage of our Christmas in July Sale! 20% off the whole store! 20% off everything* in the store. *Some select items excluded. Because they are already everyday low prices. OK – sale rules: The exceptions are: No discounts on class fees No …

Hot Leather Bracelets: Are you cool enough for them?

It’s meltingly hot in Toronto, so I felt that it was time to discuss hot leather bracelets! What’s the weather like in your part of the world, and do you like leather jewelery? I haven’t made much in the way of leather jewelery, but I’d like to change that in the near future. Leather is one of those frontiers that I’ve been hesitant to cross. But why, you say? I don’t really know. Several years ago, I did make a series of Regaliz leather bracelets. They were fast, fun, easy to do, and made great gifts! Simple components, that slide …

Explore your jewellery-making options

If you were to design a necklace for this little rubber ducky – what would you do? A simple strung necklace to emphasize the ‘biker chick’ feel of the sunglasses? How about a metalwork pedant? Needless to say, there are lots of options! Our mid-July classes offer lots of options too when it comes to learning how to make jewellery. Lucie Lee will take you through the steps of a wire work component that can be use in a variety of ways. Anne Marie Desaulniers will help you explore how to create molds that you can use for resin, polymer …
