You don’t know what you’re missing, if you’ve never worked with beads and felt!
Okay, beads on their own are undoubtedly delicious, but there’s an added something special, when you stitch them onto felt. No, not craft felt silly, but richly textured wool felt! It’s absolutely delightful!!!
I love working with wool felt! It started off with a simple, wet felting play date with friends! Then I combined some of those pieces with fibre, beads, free motion, and hand stitching. A few were sold, but others remain in my possession. Pre-beading obsession, if you please!
This piece of felt was made in that very first session. It is one of my favourites, and currently hangs on my living room wall.
Sad story! One of my beads and felt, and free-motion stitch pieces, was actually ruined at a show! When the show closed, I found that someone had carelessly run a pen, the length of the piece. I like to think that it was accidental, but who knows? I still have that piece, and will one day figure out how to fix it to my satisfaction. If there wasn’t silk involved, I would have already tried the cheap hairspray trick!!
These bracelets are a result of a couple of classes at BeadFX, with Dawn Liu-Smyth (who is now working out of her own studio). I also made a vessel in another class, but confess that it’s still a work in progress! Sigh! When I finally get around to finishing it, there will be heavy beads and felt, and hand embroidery involved.
Another UFO is this book cover (needle felted onto a Pellon Gelli print)! I love the piece, but now need to figure out how to add the signatures. I already know how to do this, but am stuck on the shape, and type of pages to use. Perhaps this winter!
Check out my little landscape pendants! Quick, easy, delightful, and needle felted!! I love them so much, that I’ve scheduled an October workshop.
What’s next for me? Good question! I will make a larger, frameable landscape, that will be embellished with a combination of beads and felt.
I will make felted beads, stones, and soap, oh my! No beads on the soap though! That would be stupid!!!
Have I tempted you to get up close and personal, with a few beads and felt? Try it, you might like it!!!
