A Sneak Peek at the New Swarovski Update – Fall/Winter 2018/2020 – Part 1

We got our sneak peak at the new Swarovski products that are coming up. This will be the Winter 2019 collection – because they are always a year ahead. This gives the designers time to get stuff made and out there and be on trend.   I apologize for the photography – I shot this on my phone in a darkened conference room. Some are photos of the powerpoint slides, so the perspective is a little skewed. The actual Swarovski images will come along soon enough – along with the actual products, which aren’t even here yet – so this …

it’s dark in here

It’s dark in here. The whole store is in a kerfuffle right now: we’ve been without power for all of Sunday, and only half power on Saturday, since a racoon went to the big garbage truck in the sky by straddling two high voltage wires leading into the building. What with one thing and another, the electrician coming out, and then hydro, then not being able to get access and then needing another guy – it’s the usual “hurry up and wait” snafu scenario that modern life gifts us with on a daily basis. It’s annoying for us, but potentially …

Test Results – Firing the new Lab Created Gems

At the beginning of August – we added some Lab Created Gems for use in Metal Clay. A couple of the gals here who work with metal clay extensively wanted to double check that the stones would handle the heat without significant colour change. To test them, they were placed into a kiln and fired, without being embedded in metal clay. For the first firing, the gems were placed into a cold kiln. Ramp rate (speed of temperature increase) was set to full (as fast as the kiln will go), the temperature was set to 1650 degrees Fahrenheit (the hottest …

Rhombuses and Ooak Lampwork Dragons, oh my!

Two very exciting new items this week – which to talk about first? Ok – the Rhombus beads! The Rhombus bead is a larger than usual 2-hole bead – designed by Lena Gillespie for the Canadian manufacturer and wholesaler – John Bead. It is a a parallelogram with opposite equal acute angles and opposite equal obtuse angles, and four equal sides. They fit together like puzzle pieces and because they are a larger size – they work up quickly. They are fun to play with! And, of course, my burning question is … can you make a stretchy bracelet out …

Beads can add years to your life

Add years and improve the quality of your life. Repetitive motion activities, like stringing beads, bead weaving, lampworking, hammering metal, even sorting and picking out beads, can trigger a state of “flow” in your brain, in the same way that meditation can. In addition to making an already happy person happier, it is also effective for dealing with stress by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the involuntary system that controls heart beat, blood pressure, etc.), and – in turn – quieting the “fight or flight” response. Because we all have stress in our lives. We might not be chased by …

Interchangeable Pendants

I didn’t get around to talking about these new items with the Thursday update, because, well – I got distracted. But I thought you might want to see them, instead of just stumbling across them. Anyway – we have these three new interchangeable pendants, that are really quite clever. The first one is a fairly classic design – it has a screw on ball, and you put the pendant of your choice (forward facing hole) on it, and screw on the ball end.   The design is clean and simple they they look stunning. It’s a very versatile item too. …

Twist and Hex … or The Endless Band Looms

Well, Bead it up Baby Twist and Hex Come on, come on, come, come on bead it now Come on and bead it next ooooo, aaaaahh …. Get your bead on … feel the bead … let your fingers dance to the rhythm … New this week – we’ve added the Miyuki Twisted Hex Cut size 10/0s. The twisted and faceted shape make for an interesting visual texture, and a more unpredictable play of light. Unpredictable is good, right? Oooo, shiney. Ask not for whom the bead looms – it looms for thee! If you are currently being torn between …

Stoney Stuff

Old Stoneface has struck again and we have some of your favourite stones on deck this week. We have tourmaline – which is tourmalicious. Tourmaline means many-coloured, and from cream to butterscotch to strawberry to berry to licorice – tourmaline is many-flavoured too. Labradorite, labradorite, can’t get enough of that labradorite! Also classic – Amethyst! Dog Tooth Amethyst, with it’s distinctive jagged bands of white and cream, and the classic purple amethyst too. But, with either one, remember to not store them in sunlight – UV light will fade your amethyst. (I found this out the hard way – I …

OOAK – One of a Kind

One of a kind items. We know that it doesn’t make a lot of sense from a business perspective to put “One of a Kind” items on the website. We know that people shop on other sites – like etsy – for one of a kind items. But we also know that you trust us, and some of you like to get all your stuff in one place. And gosh darn it – we live in a big country, and it’s not possible for all of you to get to the store. 😉 Plus, our buyer is a genius. So, …
